Lunch menu is excellent! If you like it spicy, this is the place. I've had the Jumbalaya, Shrimp Etouffee, and BBQ sandwich. All were great. My only suggestion for Cheri's is to stay open later! Hard to stop by and pick up something for dinner when they close at 6. Extend your hours to 7 and you will probably see more business.
finally made it to Laura Albert's for lunch. Food was awesome! I got the seared tuna sandwich. nice, thick cut of tuna, seared wonderfully, piled high with fresh tomato. side of asian slaw which i did feel was missing a little something but couldn't place it. also, this was a little expensive for a place i could come on the regular (good thing it was a work lunch), $13 for the sandwich, but def worth it!
I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch at Laura Alberts. Not too long ago, I met my girlfriends for a glass of wine. They have quite a selection, but what I enjoyed was the relaxed atmosphere and ambiance. I will be back for their Wednesday dinner! The menu looks fabulous.
They serve up some truly tasty stuff at lunch time here. Great salad like the Daniel Island which you can add perfectly grilled seafood to. Or the yummy pasta with shrimp and scallops or crabcake openfaced sandwich. Also great sweet tea and chicken salad on croissant for old school perfection. Interesting drafts and wines as well.Can't imagine brunch could be a disappointment buthaven't tried it yet. Only disappoints were average tuna and shrimp and grits.
I'm an olive oil freak, and this shop fills the bill quite nicely! I picked up the Picual oil. Apparantly, this olive will have an extremely limited pressing this season. Get it while you can!
We went a couple of weeks after they opened and everything was sublime. The food was inventive with a great conciseness. We went back this past Tuesday and I wondered what worm hole I had stepped into. For one, the place was packed to the rafters. We took the last table they had. It took a while for anyone to realize we were there and bring us menus. And then it took an even longer while for them to come back and ask if we wanted something to drink. And a while after that we got our drinks and got to order.
We had the kung pao sweetbreads, which we shared, then we both got ramen. The kunb pao sweetbreads were sweet breads. They were not even remotely kung pao. It's supposed to be bite-sized chunks of protein with a mixture of chilies, Sichuan peppercorns, and peanuts. The sweetbreads were fried in three large chunks. The sauce was simply straight soy sauce that completely overpowered the delicate sweetbreads and was so salty I couldn't eat it. There were no peanuts, peppercorns or chilies in sight, and it was topped with some incredibly pungent scallions that I was still tasting at lunch the next day. When our waitress -- who is one of the owners -- asked if we liked it, I said no and explained why. She asked if we wanted the chef to remake it for us. I was thinking in my head "he doesn't know what kung pao is", but I simply said no.
I ordered my ramen with lamb belly, kim chee, and pickled mushrooms in a pork broth. The lamb belly was three postage stamp sized slivers that I had to dig to find. The kim chee was spicy, but straight from the refrigerator, as were the pickled mushrooms. I didn't mind the kim chee being cold but was put off by the mushrooms.
I enjoyed talking with the owner and we had an okay time, but something really went off the rails. Because we had such a wonderful time the first visit we'll give them another try. I hope they can pull it together.
Its a great little place, great selection of cheese and meats but the prices will have you heading for the door.
If you love cheese and have got some cash burning in your pocket though, I can't think of a better place in town.

I can appreciate what they are trying to do... emulate a certain New York establishment but they have too much going on and not enough influence on the basics. A half hour to get a sandwich made, no cashier available and a premium price tag. Go down to Bull Street to get a better sandwich with no frills.
If you're into processed, flavored oils, then this is your place. If you're looking for cold pressed, unfiltered traditional oils, then you'll be disappointed. But I guess like most of the stores on King Street, they cater to the tourists. I've been able to find traditional oils (filtered) just as good in local grocery stores (not Whole Foods or Earth Fare). Oils are like wine, its really a personal preference.
I thought the food was overpriced for not being anything fancy. In addition, I asked the server to leave something off my plate, but she put it on there anyway and then had the nerve to get into an argument with me about whether or not I should still pay for it. She charged me for the same plate twice. It was an awful dining experience and I will not be returning. There are too many other places with better food and better service.
Meh. Overpriced bottles. Overpriced cheeses. Pretentious service.
I just have a problem paying as much for an iced tea as I do for food.....it may be good, but WAY overpriced!
Last night I made my first visit to Laura Alberts. My friends and I were excited for the French Broad beer dinner. We were not disappointed! The reception gave us time to peruse the retail wines and beers as well as the cookbooks, cocktail accessories and other items. The dinner was excellent. The brewer talked a bit about each beer while it was being served and the dishes paired perfectly with the selections. I was super impressed by the prawn appetizer. It was pastrami wrapped prawn with a creamy cabbagy side and an IPA sauce. It was familiar ingredients that created a reuben-like flavor only subtle and soft. YUM. We all agreed that the salad was "fancy" but once the poached egg was broken and mixed into the frissee with the bacon and the sweet tomatoes it had the flavors and textures of a perfect BLT. The duck, my mouth is watering now thinking about the smoked salt seared duck. There is something so indulgent about salty duck fat that makes me feel spoiled! The fat was like butter and the meat so tender it melted in my mouth. The creamy barley and earthy mushrooms were like the ultimate comfort food and the Anvil Porter cherry lacquer gave the hint of sweetness that rounded out every perfect bite. The service was spot on. The beers were smooth and paired perfectly. My friends and I had a great time eating and drinking and just being us while enjoying a good atmosphere, super food and great beer.

I found Laura Alberts on BeerAdvocate.com when I was looking for beer places to visit in the Charleston area. They had some great reviews so my wife and I stopped by yesterday. I was blown away with the selection. They didn't have a lot of beer, but the beers they had were really hard to come by! Bottles: Oskar Blues Old Double Bagger, Brooklyn Black Ops, and Terrapin's Georgia Theater Dubbel Draft: Ballast Point Sculpin, Allagash Confluence. We decided to stay for lunch. We had the Ahi Rare tuna over bok choy salad (so good) and split the Mortadella sandwich (the menu it explained that mortadella is a high end baloney of sorts made with pistachios) the sandwich came with grilled onions and a imperial stout mustard (beer food heaven!!) The price matched both the quality of the food and the portion size provided. They served the beers in proper glassware!
I saw an ad for a dinner they having tonight with Sweetwater, my wife and I are attending - I'll follow up with a dinner review.

Would love to visit this shop...the next time I am in SC! I import Tutti Amici cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil (slightly filtered)...sounds like it might be just the new product needed in your shop!!!
My wife and I have been on countless dates, but when we choose Et Cetera, it was a simply wonderful experience. I have had many tapas being from Spain, but Chef John's tapas were so full of flavor we loved every bite. My wife and I can't stop talking about it. Both servers were friendly and charming and helped us with our selections of wine and food. Simply the best place to be at when you want to reconnect with a loved one and sample great food and wine.
I went for growler hour yesterday and it was a little overwhelming. The was no order. I sat outside, ordered a beer, waited about 20 mins, it never came. Got up, and went to get my growler filled. They filled it, I brought it home and realized that it was only filled 3/4 of the way up! I was kinda disapointed after i just spent $17 for a growler fill and only got about $10 worth of beer. The idea is great, just way to disorganized. Not sure if I would ever go back...
