We went for sunday brunch and had a great meal! We had the crab soup to start which was deliciously creamy. I had the apple bacon duck andouille gratin which was a hearty choice for spring brunch yet still mouthwateringly tasty. My bf had the burrito which was pretty standard as far as charleston breakfast burritos go, though the avocado topping was a wonderful dressing with nice hints of lime and cilantro. Finally we had the passionfruit sorbet, and though i'm not truly a sorbet fan, it was very refreshing and tart. All in all an awesome brunch experience - the service was friendly and inviting though clearly the regulars get the best attention, and I don't necessarily think that's such a bad thing! Definitely Charleston's best kept secret for brunch!
The food was excellent, I had the rabbit. It was incredibly noisy though, and I was a little confused about the "fine dining" face of the restaurant, compared to the "sports bar" atmosphere of the bar. Maybe we just went on an odd night.
Delectable Food, Cozy Atmosphere, Amazing Service!
I went to "the Fork" this past Friday with my other half. We were seated by the front window at a sweet table for two- the atmosphere was so cozy and comfortable- like being in a French mama's dining room- we were made to feel very at home & very welcome by our awesome server Liz and Kerranna (our buser) was fun and friendly to talk to also! The food was fantastic- if you are a Beef Tartare fan- have it- it is lovely and creamy and the capers give it the perfect zing to off-set the creaminess of the egg- delectable! If you order beef and Liz is your server - be sure to ask her where the beef comes from- she is extremely knowledgeable about the menu items and probably one of the best servers I've had so far in town. Loved the Foie Gras pate- amazing and creamy and perfectly complimented by the prune compote- I would eat that everyday if I could. Also enjoyed the mussels and the white wine & garlic sauce they were sauteed in- my mouth is watering writing about it! The Pomme frites fried in duck fat- I don't even need to say anything here- you can just imagine how good those were. As we were about to leave Perig himself came over and and introduced himself- amazingly charming and charismatic owner! Felt very intrigued by him- will definitely be going back for the food and another Perig sighting!
They have the best brunch in the Charleston area. I love this place!
Went on a Wensday evening. I have to say Im glad I did, though there were flaws. First of all the service was SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. And I mean Slow. As an App I had the Mussles. The broth was fantastic, but were slightly overcooked. My wife had the Scallop Gratinee, which is exactly the same as Rue de Jean, though the Haricot Verts were better. As my main I had the Shrimp and Crab, which was wonderful, but didnt live up to the "spicy" label. Also, the dish it was served in had a quarter sized chip in it. After our meal we had the Creme Brulee, safe I know but a good brulee is a weakness of mine. and it was good. Overall worth a trip, just expect to take some time over dinner, and longer waiting for the check
I really enjoyed my brunch experience. I had the fried green tomato app and the apple and duck sausage gratin. Very rich, very yummy!
Upon opening, I was a frequent visitor for food and drink. Food was always good and enjoyed the familiar crowd.
Some time back, I stopped in for a beer and meal, late night, and not too busy.
Hostess and staff put me off quite a while seating others, kept myself and a friend waiting as if at a bus stop. After getting undivided attention, we were informed "they were running out of meat and shutting the kitchen down", but "AC's across the street is still serving"!!!
Q.So why are you seating others that came in after us? A."They had reservations"
You get the idea. Boycott list forever. Unacceptable. No stars and a middle finger.
Walking distance from my home...I'll go anywhere but 39 Rue de Jean and never recommend.
We lucked into this great authentic French restaurant when the highly touted nearby places were too noisy and too big. Two appetisers (eggplant-zuchinni-goat cheese-tomato with sauce and duck confit-spinach-duck pate salad) made a whole meal for each of us, topped off with profiterols and French press coffee. My Cote de Rhone 2007 was excellent and not overpriced. It reminded us of the neighborhood family restaurant we found near our hotel in Paris in 1978 but there was no family dog making the rounds of the tables for snacks. We'll come back anytime we're in Charleston.
We'll be back, but not likely to order the same thing. We sat at the bar and enjoyed the company of some other patrons. The bar tender was very helpful by offering a better recommendation from the bottle of wine that we selected (for I believe a $2 difference in price w/ a $20 difference in taste). Their duck fat fried french fries are as good as they say and if for nothing else, you should stop in and enjoy a glass of wine with a basket of those fries. We also had a braised steak dish with carrots and potatoes and a red wine reduction type sauce. It was good, but the steak was cooked too long and was dried out. 6 glasses of wine, one basket of fries, one entree and one desert ~ $120.
It was a good experience and we'll likely go back, just won't get the braised steak dish again.
There are two things that make us talk about Fast and French a year after leaving Charleston, and will make us come back again: Chocolate Croissants and French Press Coffee. Not too sweet, perfect taste!
Just not that impressed...
Went on possibly the worst day ever--Valentine's Day. Crowded, noisy, as we expected it would be, but tolerable. Food was good, but not stellar. Waitress was friendly but REALLY pushing hard to pad the (already expensive) tab. Might go again, in the future, maybe for lunch to see if we just originally picked the worst possible day to go!
It's wonderful having a restaurant near home with great food. Maybe when Chef Fred opens Wild Olive the crowds will be smaller for awhile at the "Big Chicken". Sorry, I couldn't help myself; I lived in Marietta, GA for 18 years.
Had a great meal here last weekend. The steak frites was awesome a perfectly cooked hangar steak with a mound of there delicious fries. The service was attentive, the atmosphere was great, and lots of french wine by the glass. I found my new spot for a steak frite fix.
I'd humbly suggest you venture beyond french fries and fried scrimp at Fat Hen if you want anyone to take your "review" seriously. The drive-thru at Captain D's may be more your speed.
Fat Hen is the best thing to happen to Johns Island in the time since I moved out here ten years ago. Living nearby, take out has become a great way to avoid the crowds and still get our "fix" for the outstanding French-influenced comfort food. Oh, and the one time I had the fried shrimp (off my nephew's plate), even they were fantastic.
Fat Hen and Al Di La vie for best food for the money in Charleston.
It's definitely not up to par with it's first few years of operation. I've been eating here since the month it opened, but very infrequently the past year. Service has been acceptable but not as good as it was. The food has been ok but not stellar. The menus were down right dirty. It really is not appetizing to be handed a menu with food smudged on it and burn holes. There are too many good restaurants in this town to tolerate mediocrity, especially at these prices.

I agree with the other posters here. This place has gone down the crapper. The staff has a major attitude problem and the restaurant itself is living off its past reputation.
Don't know what planet you're from but I love this place. Yes it's loud. That happens when you're packed with a lively crowd. The food has been delicious every time I've eaten here over the last six years. If servers seemed disinterested it was more likely that they were slammed busy. If you love coq au vin or mussels or a great steak with fries... run don't walk. Oh, and check you're crappy attitude at the door.
Crowded, bad table placing. Felt like we were out in the middle of traffic. Server seemed very uninterested, and food seemed to be made hastily. Underseasoned, poorly prepared, and unappetizing presentation. Was actually very suprised they allowed my appetizer to be brought to the table. Overall poor experience.
