This is one of our favorite go to's for good food and a great scene! So many items on the menu that we love and great drinks as well! Love that it is dog friendly and it has the best outdoor seating on the peninsula.
Food was delicious and I will be dining there again. While many people may not appreciate a business trying to start from the ground up, I do. They have the main ingredient right and that is the food, everything else will come with time.
Food was excellent. The price was high, but I was able to share a meal and still have leftovers because of how much food that comes with the meal. Try to oxtails, you won't regret it.
The food was very good, but as another visitor noted, the service was rather slow and inattentive. However, the main reason I haven't been back is that the lasers made it feel like dining in the cross-fire of a Star Wars battle.
Very good food. Unpleasant experience. Not likely to return.
I visited Jamaican Me Hungry with 5 friends on a recent Saturday afternoon. Both of the CP reviews are correct about the flavor and quality of the food. Between the six of us in our party, we sampled the jerk chicken, the curried goat, the oxtails, and the fish entrees, as well as the beef patties. The plates were presented in a very attractive manner and everyone was happy with their food. However, getting to that point was not easy or enjoyable.
The first misstep was right after we sat down and looked at the menus. Perhaps there was a misunderstanding on our part (I am willing to concede this point), but we were expecting a more casual dining experience. Instead, the menu pricing was much closer to formal dining standards. In hindsight, I suppose the prices are appropriate, considering they include soup and salad, but the menus did not state that. When I told one of the servers that we would have to come back another time because the prices were higher than our party was prepared for, I was told they do have a lunch menu with lower prices, and she handed several lunch menus to me. What the heck?!?! It was around 1:00 in the afternoon when we walked in. Why weren't we informed of the lunch menu to begin with?
So, we ordered. And waited. The only other party in the restaurant left shortly after we ordered. For the next 30 minutes we sat and attempted to amuse ourselves. I understand and appreciate that made-to-order food takes time. But during that time there was not a single attempt from any of the staff to engage us in conversation, and no bread or crackers to snack on, not even the option to buy an appetizer, from what I could tell.
Finally the food came out and it was good. But I did have to ask, twice, to have our glasses of water refilled -- even though we were still the only party in the restaurant.
As we were leaving, another table had just been seated. They were being welcomed very warmly, and we overheard one of the staff tell the party that samples would be brought out so they could decide what they liked before ordering. Perhaps if that level of hospitality had been displayed to us, I would be considering a second visit.
dsharlee: how can you give a 5-star review to a place you have not yet visited?
The food was good, the decor weird, and the overall experience marred by the gigantic TV staring me in the face.
The prices seemed high at first, but the menu doesn't say that main courses include a soup or salad. Adjusting for that and it falls in line. I would prefer those extras be listed a la carte, though, if for no other reason that it would have given me something to read. The menu consists of three or four selections. That's it.
The flavors are spot on. My jerk chicken was overcooked but delicious, and the extra hot sauce they provided gave it enough moisture. My partner's goat stew was very flavorful. It had far too many bones for me, but he lived in the Caribbean and said that's how it's supposed to be so I left him to it.
They tried in an obvious way to make it elegant, but it falls short. It reminds me of that part of the Caribbean that's stuck in a 70's time warp. There was a TV a few inches over my partner's head playing Bob Marley concert videos. It was another odd design choice that was distracting and made it seem more like a bar than a restaurant.
Closed for dinner on Thursday? Fer shizzle?
Food was excellent. Slightly pricey, but it was a fun experience. I'll be back and recommend it to friends.
Oh, I can't wait to try this one! Sounds great.
Always had a great time here, sure its a bit touristy, but living here, its nice to go out and do something fun like this place. Great ocean views, great Jerk chicken and they serve up a good solid breakfast too.
Only complaint would be that service while fair, is almost always very slow. The restaurant def runs on island time, but heck, with a view like that who cares.
We ate there once a few months back. Ordered the "jerk chicken". I'm a restaurant owner/manager and I hate it when customers get a slightly underdone piece of chicken and refer to it as "raw". I can find no other term to describe this chicken we received at Coconut Joe's other than RAW. It was literally cooked about 1/8" on either side. Like on the grill for 30-45 seconds, flip, 30-45 seconds on the other side. The entire center (75% of the chicken breast) was jelly raw.
The reaction of the restaurant was like it didn't matter a whole lot.
The manager offered us dessert.
We always enjoy Coco Joe's! The food is great and the rooftop is awesome. Live music, cold drinks and fantastic views. If you are headed to IOP this is the place to go. Look for StormChaser while you are there, Chris, Michael and Renate.. Good Times!
The food was bland (insufficient spice) and the portions, very small. We were still hungry after we left. The menu selection was minimal with 2 or 3 main courses which was not tasty nor flavorful as expected. We felt that the food was specifically prepared to cater to an American clientele (not spicy) and not for Jamaicans. It did not represent the authentic Jamaican taste at all which was terribly disappointing. Even the Jerk Chicken that is supposed to be well seasoned, was awfully bland!
The owner ignored us even though she passed by our table several times without even as much as a "hello". My husband had to literally call her to our table and introduced ourselves...telling her that his wife is Jamaican! Shame. Next time we go, we will FIRST eat elsewhere or eat at home; then just go there and sit on their outdoor patio and listen to the Friday evening LIVE Reggae band which was good. The dining area was airy and bright but the food was disappointing and not as expected.
Pro: Very good food and setting, interesting variety of food, reasonable drink prices, on-site parking, dog friendly
Con: Expensive food, service is inconsistent
We had dinner for five on a Saturday night. The weather was perfect, so they had all the bay doors open and the place had a good crowd. The wait was minimal and we moved right in. Their draught selection was good, though they were out of Dale's Pale Ale ($4) and had replaced it with Abita Lager to which our waitress made the appropriate "WTF?" face. Drinks came out fairly quickly, but that's where the problem started.
Our waitress would flee as soon as she put down something on the table, no matter if you called her, raised your hand, anything! Several tables around had a similar problem. That made putting in our food order take 10-15 minutes longer than expected. It was quite frustrating and persisted through getting the check settled. Previous visits during lunch time didn't have this problem.
The other problem is the food prices are quite high. $14 for a chorizo burger? They seem to be 30-40% over market on their menu. The food was good and both well prepared and presented. The buffalo burger, chicken kebabs (actually satays), black bean soup, and chef's salad all hit the mark. Their dessert selection was chocolate cake; evidently the bakery hadn't come through on-time with a delivery.
They also have a bocce lane and a big conversation circle outside which were great. I liked seeing the dogs welcomed though I'm sure that won't last.
Everyone looking for a venue for events or weddings, BEWARE!! This is an extremely poorly managed business! They broke their contract with me, and refuse to take any ownership for my loses. They ruined my wedding! I booked with them 6 months in advance, and they booked another wedding for that same day, and told me about it the day before my wedding. All the food was wrong, their staff drank from my bar, they were supposed to provide a tent for my guests, and never did, so I ended up having to rent one myself. They did not do ANYTHING they guaranteed with me for the event.
AVOID!!!
I have contacted the better business bureau on this company.
Took a small party to enjoy some Jamacian cuisine and was pleasantly surprise with tasty servings, a comfortable setting and excellent service. The Jerk Chicken was a big favorite with just enough spices but not too hot. The Caribbean Shrimp took high honors as well. The Jamacian Sisters have a real winner here!
Runaway Bay is a classic and a treat to the Charleston area. Authentic food with a flair. Living in New York most of my life I have tasted Great West Indian Cuisine. The Price Point is Great. The Food is Great. The Service is Greater. Experience the Ambiance of the Islands at Runaway Bay. I will continue to frequent this establishment.
