I see you have read 0 of my reviews. I caught a lot of crap for not giving Craftsman 5 stars. I only defend places that are being judged because of unrelated issues (like clothing of the customers). Old man, why not just write a review of your own? I stand by my opinions of the quality of food and drink at this establishment. Having been there 4 times now, and tasting my way through the entire food menu, I feel that I have experience enough to write my own review. But by all means, feel free to judge based on comments about skinny jeans.
Claire, when I read your comment about "yum" small plates and "gorg" space, my head filled with James Earl Jones and "totes McGoats" and along with your skinny jeans, I think THAT was what the first reviewer was talking about. His comments about the food were spot on. They may be "yums" but they're not truly representative of the menu, and the prices are a bit more than 25% high in my opinion. Small plates are yum. Space is gorg. I love skinny jeans but the previous review is really confusing. If my jeans made you dislike the restaurant I apologize?
I am not sure what the previous review is all about, but I am guessing there is a common trend from all the hating on top restaurants. My 3 experiences at Edmund's Oast have all been fantastic. I will go ahead and state that I don't own a single pair of "skinny jeans" or even loafers. I do have a lot of love for craft beer, creative food dishes, and especially charcuterie, which is exactly what the Oast aims for in clientele.
First, let's talk about the beer. Beer is the focus of this place, and it is unique in many different ways because of it. Edmund's Oast is not just a brew pub, but also an amazing beer bar. The brews on tap at this place will impress anyone who loves craft beer. And the selection isn't just focused on rare beers like Cantillon and JW Lees from Europe, but they also keep a nice supply of local beers on tap. I also like that they are sticking to unique beers for the house production brewery, as this doesn't step on any toes in the local brewery scene. If beer isn't your thing, the mixed drinks are pretty tasty as well. I am hooked on the Red Wedding, as bourbon is my go-to outside of beer.
The food... well, that is almost better than the beer. Chef Andy is creating some wonderful cured meats, which is an art much like brewing. At this point, I have tasted almost every item on the menu. The highlights, other than charcuterie, are dishes like the pumpkin custard, lamb meatballs, burgers, and porridge. I even enjoyed the hearts and gizzards dish, which was a first. The very first time we visited, I thought the porridge was a bit too salty, but that was quickly fine tuned to a more balanced salinity. Some of the dishes may be a bit small, but they are "small plates" after all. I still felt full after sharing a few with my table.
Finally, I think it is worth noting that the ambiance is very relaxing in EO. The wait staff is always attentive, and the restaurant always feels very clean. The decorating was all done with taste, and even the bathrooms felt high end. I have been to this place dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, and I have been there with a button up collar shirt. Either way, I never felt out of place. I hope the Oast keeps the energy going that they have shown in their short time in the Charleston restaurant/beer scene. I know that I will always be recommending this place to any new visitors.
We went on a cold, rainy, weekday evening a couple of weeks ago. Edmund's Oast had only recently opened and it was packed, which we expected. The space was nice and you'd never know it used to be a decorative hardware store. As soon as we walked in I knew it was the wrong place for me, though. I don't own skinny jeans or a plaid shirt with snaps. I don't wear loafers without socks and a sweater around my neck. These trappings, along with a zeal for obscure pale ales, seemed to be key components of the clientele.
We were seated at a communal table and given menus, which we could barely read between the very low light and the poor choice of font. I hadn't heard of any of the beers so I had to ask for something that wasn't hop-driven since I don't like bitter beers. The server recommended two and I chose one at random. It was pretty good but not especially memorable.
We ordered a small charcuterie platter ($12) and roasted Brussels sprouts ($6) to start. For main courses we tried the seared triggerfish ($26) and miso rubbed pork loin ($26). Both the Brussels sprouts and charcuterie were tasty, but both portions were very small. The triggerfish was slightly overcooked and a minuscule portion, but tasty. The miso rubbed pork loin was cooked nicely but also small and almost devoid of flavor. Miso packs a punch but it was completely missing. The dashi had not even a hint of the smoky ham hock flavor that was promised. I love pea pistou but this tasted like a parsley chimichurri instead. In general I felt the food was okay and had potential but was overpriced by about 25%.
I wouldn't mind going back when it warms up, sitting outside at a table and having a beer, then moving on somewhere else for a meal.
Good burgers and Good craft beer.. What else is needed?

We had all Of medical school here and they treated us like crap- we brought them business and they even kicked one of us out because he "touched" an empty keg by the bathroom apparently "depressurized" it when he first got here. The service is terrible, watch out! Bad experience.
I didn't go there for the beer (so my rating is for the food only)... and had the Pork Schnitzel and Kaesespaetzle twice now. 1st time I was positively surprised by the taste, 2nd time 2 weeks ago not so much - the Schnitzel was not cooked/fairly raw and the batter didn't even stick to the meat; the Kaesespaetzle had more cheese than Spaetzle and was more like a soup. I know how it's done right, I'm a German. At the community tables it's disruptive if someone wants to use their cards...you got to move out of the way and it seems hard to keep the tables bussed..so you kind of put the previous guest's dishes away to the side yourself and hope a waiter/waitress doesn't think it's yours.
The staff is friendly and accomodating; the atmosphere fairly loud inside and it's a loooong wait for a table. I like the interior and the outside. Hopefully this place gets the kinks worked out - has lots of potential to be the IT-spot.
Beer.....good. Lots of beer.....better.
I like the biergarten's relaxed atmosphere. If the inside gets too crowded or loud my friends and I usually go outside to play a round or two of corn hole with liters of beer in hand. The food is pretty good and I like the selection of beer they have. I have to say out of all the bars in Charleston biergarten probably has the best outside section since they have plenty of space to hang out.
Was really looking forward to this place for so long. I've been for lunch and an early afternoon beer, and it is tolerable then. The lunch food I thought was great and pretty affordable. Service at night, though, is pretty terrible (especially if you're a dude). Good luck getting a drink at the bar...and paying a little too much for it. I would just ignore the beer card thing if its not for you...
To borrow and paraphrase a comment from a friend: If you want to be a sports bar or a frat bar serving buckets of bud light, that's your prerogative and seems to be the business that is carrying you. But don't call yourself a biergarten just to use a hip term when you truly don't cater to the Charleston beer connoisseurs. That's like Taco Bell calling itself authentic Mexican cuisine.
if you are a mindless zombie who follows fads while neglecting quality, you might like this place. if you have even a whisker of taste, you won't waste your time. the food is terrible, the beer is overpriced, there is NOTHING german about it. the only thing they have going is the fact that it is new. it is located next to the projects so don't get jumped while you walk back to your car since there isn't adequate parking. actually, you might be better getting a colt .45 and hanging out on the corner. at least you won't wast too much money. i'd give them some credit for the decor, but it looked the same before the joint was purchased by the current owners. basically it will be one of those places where anyone local will stop going to within a month, and anyone still caught there will be made fun of. look at any of the reviews of this place, google, tripadvisor, etc. they all say the same thing.
P.S. i thought the point of going to a bar was having someone else pour your drinks
if you're rich this place is okay. if you're not rich, go to The Craftsman. or Gene's. or The Griffon. or anywhere else, really.
Had great beers but spent $40 bucks on 4 beers...and I poured my own beers... don't volunteer to buy a round at this place...
I will be interested to see what the comments are in a few months. But when folks take the time to write reviews, and they are not so good, maybe the owners will take note and make some immediate changes. That place has been a number of restaurants in the past, and all have failed. Unless you have something that is unique and affordable, folks will go once, and then return to their original haunts. The parking has always been a problem down there, and won't improve....ever. Where does the staff park? And if you get a reputation of being overpriced, that is an immediate stab in the heart. I'm going to try it out this weekend, and will write a review of the experience. I am looking forward to seeing how these guys have tried to be different.

I went to the Biergarten on a Saturday for lunch. I ordered the Pimento cheese roll appetizer (recommended by the server), Pork Schnitzel, tried two different beers, and my dining companion had sweet tea and a salad. The pimento cheese rolls lacked any discernible taste other than 'gooey cheese', could have been Velveeta for all I know. The pork schnitzel was as tough as shoe leather and tasted about the same as one would expect shoe leather to taste. Proper schnitzel, when prepared correctly, has been pounded thin, and could basically be cut with a fork. This was certainly not true of the Biergarten's version which was a carved piece of meat, that was then egg-battered and dredged through flour. Thankfully we passed on the 'beer card'. $50 for lunch that was not very tasty? I do not think so. My lasting impression is that if you desire a large space to hang out and drink beer, this is probably a good option, but I would skip on the food. Parking, as mentioned in several others post is a major problem.
