Re: “Lowcountry Oyster Festival”
This is the worst organized festival in my life will NEVER go again! First the traffic going into Boone Hall was moving at a snail's pace or slower, cops didn't given a damn. People cutting into traffic left and right. After an hour sitting in traffic on Long Point Rd, it took another half an hour to get thru the boone hall entrance. Second you have to park in a grass field fill with horse feces stuck to your shoes and tires. Once inside all the food stands had no organiziation, you couldn't tell where the lines started people were cutting and cursing left and right. The worst is when we got to the oyster line (if you can call it a line) it was like over a thousand people squeeze together no organization at all. It was like everybody was begging for free food! There was no exit you had to fight your way back thru the crowd carrying your bucket of oyster (if your were lucky to get one). We never got our bucket of oyster after waiting over an hour in the mosh pit. We got to the front of serving tables but once we were there the girl up front said " we are all out of oysters on our side you need to move over to your left side to get your oyster. How the hell do you shift over 1000 people to your left when everybody has been moving forward for over an hour. Why couldn't the staff move their lazy butts and bring buckets of oysters over to all the people been waiting over an hour! So we were like efff this, there is no way we are getting oysters. So we left the line after over an hour waiting. We ended up eating nasty burgers and cupcakes because the other vendors ran out of food! We paid $30 to get in got $40 in food tickets! Thats $70 to wait hours in traffic, stepping on horse poop, waiting over in hour in a mosh pit for oysters and never getting any, and eating burgers, cupcakes, and drinking $2 mountain dew from a can that only cost 25 cents! I would have been 1000 times happier if I just went to Captain D's that Sunday.

It is a lie that the Vatican wants expanded against the fact that abortions save lives, birth control pills cure vulvadynia, ovarian cysts & endometriosis BUT THESE gawdly gangsters won't admit any such fact, just their religious obsessions with fertilized human ova, these were the same dozen or so tampon terrorists who show up every Saturday morning to scream at all who enter the abortion clinic on Ashey River road

This was a poorly conceived bar crawl. It was $35 for a SELF-guided tour, which I could have done myself on any given weekend. They organizers provided a t-shirt, a beer passport that listed the participating restaurants and allowed 2 small samples per stop. What makes a sponsored bar crawl fun is that it is a group activity.
With the easy availability and diversity of beers available in this town, anyone can set up a happy hour pub crawl for much cheaper and not be limited to just participating bars.

Do NOT get the Wednesday $20 all you and eat and drink buffet!! All you get are hot dogs, potato salad and Miller High life. For the same money, I would rather be able to go to the vendor and pick my own beer and food. Unless you are willing to drink little dixie cups of High Life stay with the beer vendors.

Cancelled because the organizers failed to get the proper permits. I doubt the declared themselves a charity and luckily for them, they didn't get stuck with a big tax bill.

I went to have dinner at Tasty Thai and was severely disappointed. As I tried to order a drink (I'm 23 and a College of Charleston graduate who has been living in Charleston for some time), I was denied due to the large group of underage kids there participating in some event run by sixteen year old doormen. I attempted to enjoy my meal, which took nearly an hour to receive, only to get refused by an INCREDIBLY rude bartender (female) who proceeded to tell me that due to the amount of underage kids, they were not accepting my ID. Not only was this unfair, it shows an extreme lack of attentiveness on their part, as my drivers license is obviously me and states my true age. Incredibly disappointed with her attitude and the wait for the unimpressively bland food. Would not recommend to ANYBODY. WOK is far superior and much more reasonably priced.

Poor Planning and Poor Execution:
1. Drink tickets? Who knew there was a limit when the advertisement read "all inclusive". Caused a major alcohol frenzy leading to issue #2.
2. Bar was out of control. Not only did I feel like I was in a mosh pit but why were there not a. mutiple bars b. enough staff?? Imagine the chaos if the bartenders had to deal with cash/credit card.
3. Hors D'oeuvres? Really? cheese cubes and carving stations. But it didn't really matter because there was...
4. Not enough seating/tables. How do you suggest I hold my purse, drink, plate, and eat all at the same time?
5. Who knew the bar closed at 12:30? (unless you were reading your drink tickets while you were waiting in the bar line) Even so, who knew that when the bar closes at 12:30, you would not be able to get a drink at 12:24?
6. Where were the party favors?
7. The ball dropped? Could have seen that better on my 32" tv.
8. I love dancing on broken plastic champagne glasses almost as much as I love...
9. Getting kicked out at 1. I spent approximately 1 hour trying to enjoy my $95 (I'm sorry, I mean $104 bc when I called I was told they were sold out): arrived at 9 and waited in line. got to the bar and waited in line. tried to eat and quickly dismissed that idea. went back to the bar and waited in line. watched the band. waited in line. watched the screen. danced. went to get a drink at "last call", got denied. lights came on and we were herded towards the door.
10. Locked out of the hotel and denied reentry to a. find my friend b. use the restroom c. not freeze to death while i waited on my taxi (for 1 hour) d. not get raped.
What a party.

It was terrible, my wife and I lasted about 15 minutes before we left in disgust. Open bar, no way, 10 drink tickets which woulx have been fine if we could have actually gotten a drink.there was one bar that was mobbed, I am assuming we would have gotten a drink in about an hour but I wasnt going to waste my entire evening trying. The entire thing was a ripoff, I will never waste my money there again. I am so angry I wasted over $200 on that, one positive is I didnt let it ruin my entire new years because I was smart enough to leave very early.

This was absolutely the worst event I have ever been to I in my life. Do not waste your money on this IF these people are dumb enough to try this again next year. It was a sad pathetic joke and here's why: not enough bars, bartenders, or food. It took us 45 minutes to get one drink. They advertised this event as "open bar" however, what they really meant was "we'll give you 10 crappy drink tickets and make you wait an hour for the one drink you can get at a time so that you'll be so pissed off by midnight you won't care that it's a new year." The food was basically chicken tenders and cheese squares. I put on a better spread for my own family for dinner every night. The biggest kicker of all was that they closed the bar at 12:10am, the reason being, "the police are telling us to close the bar because there's too many intoxicated people." I mean really? It WAS new years eve afterall!! So,there goes your remaining 9 drink tickets. People were about to revolt and start a riot. They were throwing their sad little paper drink tickets at the bartenders and event manager. It was unbelievably pathetic waste of $95, wait $104 after the fees were tacked on. My advice, don't go to this next year. I can promise that no one that was there last night will be there next year. This thing sucked.

I wish they were not having this shameful event...the movies/films are garbage and a shame to promote homosexuality...It is a sad day to have a gay pride festival in Charleston...let's keep Charleston half decent and traditional and tell the gay pride people to go elsewhere!

Charleston, you have disappointed me. I have lived here for eleven years and never been to the city's Christmas Parade. I was led to believe that the theme was Christmas, not advertising for the ghetto fabulous. Excuse me if I'm being politically incorrect here. I was expecting some Shriner's on motorcycles or in little cars, some firetrucks, different beauty queens, city council, some sports teams, and high school bands. Since when is a 1985 Chevy Caprice Classic with 24" rims blasting Lil' Wayne with two people sitting on the roof indicative of the Lowcountry Christmas spirit? I also was unaware that DJ Goldie's posse of clowns were standing in as Santa's elves. Are budget cuts at the North Pole really that bad this year? Fortunately, my eight month old does not yet understand the art of "booty dancing" and was unaffected by our early departure that caused us to miss Santa this year.

I would like to share my first, and undoubtedly last, experience at the annual Skinful Halloween party. Specifically I would like this letter to serve as a warning to potential future attendees, and as a reprimand to the organizers and the North Charleston Police officers who were serving as security at the gate. What follows is a sadly typical abuse of power that, albeit wielded in a petty way, potentially could have - and may well have - had disasterous consequences for the unfortunates who suffered its brunt.
The event was huge, and throughout the majority of the night all went well. However, we were all led to believe that, being a BYOB event, and taking place in a comparatively isolated locale, there was no set closing time: party till dawn if you wanted! However, shortly after 3:00 a.m. I stepped beyond the gate to see if a friend of mine had left. I had not walked more than twenty feet away when I noticed said party still within the fenced-in area. Returning, I was promptly stopped and told by the officers on guard that I could not re-enter. When I protested, saying that I hadn't even stepped out of their eyeshot a moment before, I was informed that if I, or anyone else, made that magical step past the perimeter, we were barred from re-entry! No forewarning, nothing. Didn't matter if it was only one foot beyond.
Stepping away for a moment in disbelief I tried to gather my thoughts and decide what to do: the people I had ridden there with were still inside! ...presumably would still BE inside for at least another hour or more! While thus engaged I witnessed a small party arrive with one gentleman holding a case of beer under his left arm-- not suprising, given no alchohol was being sold inside, it follows that people would have to leave to restock their deplenished supplies, either from their cars or the local quick-stops. They, of course, were turned away like myself.
And so, I watched with increasing disgust as this apparently arbitrary - and UNNANOUNCED! - enforment played itself out again and again: blank stares of disbelief; mouths agape from people who claimed they had paid $35 for their bracelets barely an hour before! Tough shit.
Soon a crowd of the discomfitted milled about in the street beyond, unsure what to do. It was then that the cops started getting surly. If you didn't stand clear of the gateway there would be consequences. One man who protested that his ice chest was inside (the"holding area" for coolers now taking on a literal meaning) was told that if he did not desist he would be arrested, nevermind whatever property he had in the now-compounded arena!
However unfair these events may seem they were nothing compared to the girl who started crying because her friend was inside with her car keys and did not know where she was. She explained that the friend may have assumed she had met someone else she knew and left without her (there being the inevitable chaos that ensues from such social throngs). No matter, she could not come inside.
That's right. In the darkened streets of the isolated, ghost town-like setting of the former Naval Base, in the heart of crime-riddled North Charleston, well past midnight but long before dawn, a girl (probably underage) was given a choice by those sworn to serve and protect: clear away or face arrest. I'm not kidding, not exagerating, had no axe to grind prior to that evening - neither her tears nor her stranded situation had any effect on their stance. She could wait outside and hope for the best!
What became of her? I don't know. She ran off through the pool of people standing about into one of several darkended parking areas beyond that are surrounded by the towering ruins of industrial buildings. I hope she got home okay. What's worse is that she was probably only one of many young women caught off guard in like circumstances.
All of this could have been avoided had the guards, or staff members, told exiting parties that they could not return if they left. Apparently they couldn't be bothered.
Dozens of others suffered the same indignity and unfair treatment as myself, and those just described. As such I would like to call on those others who shared that experience to likewise write in and complain... To the City Paper, to the people responsible for organizing the event, to the North Chuck cops who may have placed young girls in harm's way.
I've heard several times that in years past this event was a blast. However, like any event that has gotten too big for its own good, this one has ceased to be anything more than a cynical way to make money and f*ck people over.

Be very careful. The food is good, but this crazy chef is a crook. He'll come to your table, shower your group with things you would not dare order, especially the liquor, and then bill you so hard it's embarrassing. Be very wary if Ve-drink-ski comes anywhere near your table and starts lavishing. It's all a sham...

I had called the number above for the JCC and they said that this was actually being organized through the Charleston Sports and Social Club and that it was already started up (a friend of mine made the same call the day before and got the same response). Went there last night and it turns out that it is actually kickball that is being run by the CSSC on the JCC's side fields. Although I remember playing several times at the JCC about 4 years ago on Tuesday nights, volleyball is no longer being played, nor is there any intention for it to be run at the JCC by CSSC because of the small space and lack of indoor A/C in the gym. I think that this ad needs to be reviewed.

I attended this event, and thought Ms. Weir's research was interesting and thought provoking. However, the audience treated her very rudely and were disruptive throughout, making the Q&A portion incoherent. CofC students are generally more open minded and welcoming of different (and well argued) viewpoints than the behavior displayed at this event.
