The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art

Staff Pick

Artists need room to express themselves. They need space to paint with broad brushstrokes or emote across a rehearsal space. After decades of use, the Albert Simons Center wasn’t cutting it. So the College of Charleston built a 70,000-square-foot, $27-million structure with five floors of classrooms, practice areas, dance and lighting studios, faculty offices, a giant darkroom for photographers, and a bright space to house the Halsey Institute. The new building was unveiled to the public in January at an event attended by donors Marion and Wayland H. Cato, Jr., after whom the center is named. Students are already making good use of the extra space, with art installations and performances. Not to be outdone, the Simons Center is also scheduling major renovations.
