Let’s face it, we’re a funny city. We’ve got comedy coming out of every nook and cranny, and Theatre 99 is the home of improv comedy in Charleston. So it makes sense that they’ll be hosting the 3-on-3 Improv Tournament. The tournament takes place every Friday until the end of the month. Six teams compete against one another, and all they have is eight minutes to impress the audience. That’s right, the audience gets to choose what two teams will move on to the next round. “It’s an improv show like no other that we’ve done,” says Greg Tavares, Theatre 99 co-founder. “It’s like a tightrope walk, when they succeed it’s exciting to see them succeed, but when they fail, it’s such a shock.” For those in the crowd who are brave enough to perform, there will be a “Wild Card” team where the audience will get a chance to put their name into a hat and three people will be drawn to compete as well. Tavares says, “We’ve had Wild Card teams make it to the final two before, and it’s exciting because you’re literally voting for one of your own.” The second act of the performance will feature an improv jam, which uses audience suggestions to create the scenes, with the winning teams.
