3 on 3 Long Form Improv Tournament Prelim Round
Fri., April 8, 8 p.m., Fri., April 15, 8 p.m. and Fri., April 22, 8 p.m. 2011
Theatre 99’s 3 on 3 Long Form Improv Tournament is five nights of guffaws, debauchery, tomfoolery, and awkward silence. Beginning Fri. April 8, five teams of three will perform improv for eight minutes in order to win votes from the audience. The top two teams from each of the four nights will make it to the April 23 finals. “You’re going to see 15 performers a night with some unique approaches to comedy,” says Brandy Sullivan, co-founder of Theatre 99. “We’ve had people slowly undress during their acts to their underwear (striprov), improv while dressed as ninjas (ninjprov), and drunkprov, which speaks for itself.” The improv tourney continues its interesting take on audience participation: the fifth team of each night will be a “wild card” team compiled of willing people from the audience. “A few years ago we had a wild card team in third place overall,” says Sullivan. Last year the City Paper had a team in the competition, further proof that anybody can do it.
