We just got word of a dance party breaking out tonight at Club Pantheon. Matthew Bowers tells me he and friends have been trying to organize a culture clash-type event for the past few weeks and are now seeing something gel. Tonight's event includes dancers, deejays, local artists, photographers, screen printers, and more. Bowers will be behind the turntable, as well as a few more other groovy folks, too, I'd imagine. Artists will be on hand to print logos-of-your-own-making on t-shirts. The event is called "Blume" and you can find out more at the Blume Group on Facebook. They'd like to make this a regular mobile dance party in venues around the city. I'll write more as I get more information. Till then . . .

South Windermere Wraps

Posted by Nick Smith on Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 12:35 PM

It's official: South Windermere Cinemas, West Ashley's only family-run moviehouse, is closing for good. A bunch of fans of the $3-a-ticket venue will be saying farewell to the managers with a party on Wednesday, September 12 from 6-9 p.m.

Everyone who's ever caught a cheap flick there is invited, as well as all the people who kept meaning to go but never got round to it. They're invited to bring their own food and drink, listen to live music by Shrimp City Slim and Dr. Pickup, and take a last look at the exotic pets, comfy old-style seats and the lived-in-looking lobby before the theatre shuts up shop to becomes a retail space.

It will also be a chance to say goodbye and thankyou to Sandra Purro and her son Michael, who've been working hard to keep the place open for the past few years. Above all we'll miss their banter, the beer and the friendly, informal atmosphere.

Furry News

Posted by Nick Smith on Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 1:38 PM

The John Ancrum SPCA's Furry Affair art auction won't be held until Friday night at 6 p.m. But the art's on display right now at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park, and the organization is taking bids.

Here's a chance to see the lots without having to worry about having to negotiate crowds of patrons, autograph hunters chasing the personalities who've contributed art, or a tense bidding atmosphere (all that can wait till Friday evening).

Peach Boy

Posted by Nick Smith on Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 8:08 PM

For those who like out-of-the-ordinary music shows, local multimedia-loving singer/storyteller Yukari Yucca will present "Peach Boy" at the Map Room, 1650 Sam Rittenburg, West Ashley on Thursday night (Aug. 16).

Yucca will relate "amazing stories from far away for the young and old." Peach Boy's an acquired taste - a Japanese take on heroes and happiness wrapped up in a wacky narrative. But anything different, imaginative and locally made sounds good to me.

Also on the bill: world musicians 9 On Bali and the New Music Collective.

If Vikki Carr had heard me, she’d sue

Posted by Patrick Sharbaugh on Tue, May 1, 2007 at 3:39 PM

As editor Stephanie Barna noted to me a few days ago, having your own blog is nice and all, but with ownership comes constant pressure to post — and, when I don’t, enough guilt that I may as well be Catholic. (It doesn’t help that I am, as a matter of fact, Catholic.)

Part of the reason I’d been looking forward to turning my Unscripted column into an online forum is so I can bloviate to my heart’s content about whatever arts events I’m inclined to attend on a weekend — and given that I’m the arts editor around here, I tend to go to a lot of them. But I’m quickly finding that weekend activities do not lend themselves well to timely posting, at least for this youthful blogger.

Case in point: last Thursday evening, I mingled with the blanket-bearing masses on the green at Marion Square for our second Movie in the Park, Casino Royale (great film, great Bond, great popcorn). On Friday, I caught Geoff Cormier’s intriguing outdoor shadow puppet performance Mr. Evening at Read Brothers Stereo on King Street. The first show was at 10pm, and by midnight I was two glasses deep into a bottle of something red and delicious at The Trusted Palate around the corner. By 2am Sunday morning, I was performing the liner notes to Vikki Carr’s Intimate Excitement for a crowd of either three or six, it was hard to tell at that point. (Sorry, Matt.) Finally, I spent Saturday inside Theatre 99 giggling like a little girl at their Piccolo Fringe Preview.

When, I ask you, was I supposed to write a coherent post about all, or any, of this? I’m not an early riser on weekends (one of the many benefits of being unmarried and without children), and for all its techy, populist appeal, blogging is still work, I’m afraid. Mondays, with the possible exception of Fridays, are the busiest day of the week for us editorial staffers at The Paper, and Tuesday mornings aren’t much better.

All of which explains why — only now, late on Tuesday afternoon — am I finally getting around to posting on events dating to last Thursday. Yes, all of this could be solved by simply waking up early on weekend mornings, drinking a little less, and working every morning.

Don’t hold your breath.
