Art Forms & Theatre Concepts will produce a musical based on the life of ragtime composer, Eubie Blake. It's called Eubie! and it's part of this year's MOJA Festival.

Here's the promo:

The toe-tapping musical revue “EUBIE!” written by the phenomenal Eubie Blake with lyrics by Noble Sissle will be performed as a part of the 2008 MOJA Arts Festival by Art Forms & Theatre Concepts. This fast-paced, syncopated revue will feature some very talented singers and dancers from right here in the low country. Look forward to an evening of real entertainment as we honor two African American musical pioneer. The production opens with songs are from Eubie and Sissle's 1921 Broadway musical Shuffle Along, the first all-black musical to become a box office hit and made famous the song "I'm Just Wild about Harry". The show also broke down barriers between the races at the time because it was the first time a white audience had seen a serious love affair between two black characters. Previously, black and white musicals handled these affairs on a low comedy vein. “EUBIE!” has many highlights, including a dynamic, rockin' gospel number, "Roll Jordan," that allows the audience a chance to get into the groove with their hand clapping. Then there is “Low Down Blues", "Gee I Wish I Had Someone to Love.", and "I'm Craving That Kind of Love." The production is full of memorable songs from the era. This is a performance you don’t want to miss.

Here's a link to some of Blake's music, including the famed "Charleston Rag":

Your Daily Vid: Miles Davis

Posted by John Stoehr on Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 12:56 PM

I should tell you that I love Miles Davis. I have my reasons. But they're personal, as all passions are. So you'll likely see a few vid clips of Miles along the way. Here's the man with the best quartet of the 1960s: Ron Carter on bass, Herbie Hancock on piano, and Tony Williams on drums. Sadly this video of cut short. If anyone can point me toward a longer version, gracias in advance.

Your Daily Vid: McCoy Tyner & Co.

Posted by John Stoehr on Fri, Nov 16, 2007 at 10:39 AM

When it comes to sheer badass-ness, jazz pianist McCoy Tyner fits the bill. Throughout his long career, he has attracted an army of "out" jazz musicians. Check this bass solo by Charnett Moffett. It's about as "out" as it get. As Miles Davis might say: that motherfucker terrible. This video comes in two parts, plus make sure you check out both. Moffett ends the first and begins the second. (Thanks to Bob Hardy.)

Also: You may be wondering why I'm posting all these videos and why I don't use my blog to post original material. Good questions. The first: a) I write plenty of original material, as a perusal of Unscripted will show and the second b) I think there's value in giving readers a place where they can see something interesting. My job as a critic is to talk about interesting things (yes, it's a good gig), and internet video is an obvious way to do that. Plus, I want to set a tone for Unscripted, to establish my taste and sensibility. Think of it as branding.
