News: 12-week indie film series to open at Carmike Cinemas. Cost? $5

Posted by John Stoehr on Thu, Feb 19, 2009 at 4:31 PM

For 12 weeks, beginning March 2, Carmike Cinemas brings the Independent Film Series to the James Island Carmike Cinema. It's a chance to watch independent films in the same environment as major movie studios. Ticket are $5 which is affordable for everyone.

The first film shown is Remarkable Power! produced by Tom Arnold and starring Kevin Nealon. Nealon is a talk-show host who tries to do anything in his power to stop his show from being cancelled. Hilarity, mystery, and murder ensue is this crazy comedy.

All Along follows character Richard Harrison who is going through a mid-life crisis. When he fantasizes, he actually enters his fantasies for moments at a time.

In Bad for Business, Jerry runs a business in which he stalks recently heart-broken women to boost their self-esteem. The tables turn when an old business partner, Ted, gets stalked by an ex-girlfriend.

Altered Courses takes place in the year 2042 when Sandy and Ford tell their story to a young couple trying to make important life decisions.

In One Lamb, Jackson Price finds himself in a hospital where he is diagnosed with cancer. With no one else to turn to, Price finds solace in a stranger who answered his cry for help in the dark.

In a mere 30 minutes, The Lonely Stag pays tribute to Ireland through song and poetry.

Waiting for My Real Life pays close attention to a crisis taking over America, obesity. This films proves how deep the bonds of government and corporation run.

CSO's innovative fund-raising

Posted by John Stoehr on Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 4:04 PM

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra has paired up with AbundaTrade.com (formerly Millennium Music) to enable patrons of the CSO to give support without ever actually giving a dime.

AbundaTrade.com will buy back CDs, DVDs, and books taking up space in your closet in an innovative fund-raising partnership with the CSO. Just package up your old media collections and bring them to any upcoming CSO concert or drop them off at AbundaTrade.com's warehouse located at 498 Wando Park Blvd., Suite 1000 in Mt. Pleasant.

In past fundraising events, AbundaTrade.com was able to convert a couple hundred collections into thousands of dollars by repairing and recirculating tons of CDs and DVDs. Ten percent of the total proceeds will go directly to the CSO. AbundaTrade.com will be collecting items to benefit the CSO until the Merril Lynch Masterworks concert closing night on April 25. —Candice Summers
