The Bollywood Connection

Posted by John Stoehr on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Dan McCue, a terrific business journalist, has sent City Paper a story about Charleston's connection to Bollywood, which is shorthand for India's hugely profitable movie business. Dan reports on Robert Miller, head of a local company called ReelSports that specializes in sports action sequences in films like Miracle.

In June, Miller won the Indian equivalent of a passel of Golden Globes and Academy Awards for a field hockey movie called Chak De! India (or Go! India). A scene from the movie can be seen above. Miller is now working on a movie about cricket, which India's national pastime.

More significantly, Miller, who works out of his office on East Bay Street, is on the vanguard of a global trend in which Westerners are striking gold on the subcontinent. But the showbiz is a two-way street. Indian power brokers are looking West, too.

Last month, The New York Times reported on hip-hop musician Snoop Dogg's appearance in an Indian music video called Singh is Kinng. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that actor Sylvester Stallone inked a deal with an Indian movie company. And today, NPR reports that a company called Reliance is buying up movie theaters around the country.

Dan's story comes out in Wednesday's issue of Charleston City Paper.

For NH Mr. McCain was just right. It's hard to have a 5 way debate about anything. Especially when one guy is, well...Ron Paul, and another is just so dishonest he doesnt even know when he is lying. We in NH know what the word "Amnesty" means and the word "Saw". I saw and listened and asked them all. Despite Mitt's millions, the only one that could be Commander in Chief from day one is Sen John McCain. Take the time to go see Mr McCain and you will see what I mean. I feel bad that you guys are about to get assaulted by Romney blasting the TV and radio non stop. Sometimes we counted 10x him more than any other. Really annoying. Good Luck and do your duty for your country.

Word came out today that Mitt is pulling back on his S.C. ads. We think he knows he's going to lose in S.C.

John McCain has only one answer for everything - I forget what it is. He's one step above Ron Paul, A cannon that has no BALLS like his non-existent amnesty program that is amnesty (McCain/Feingold) Hell he even hooked up with that fat drunk from Mass. The war years are now coming back, please John do yourself and America a favor and - RETIRE - Go home back to Arizona and RETIRE with those smog invested Californians. It’s is truly over for you - Get It - YOU WILL NOT BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES – EVER………………

If immigration is the main issue in South Carolina then McCain who sponsored amnesty last year is not your man. Huckabee supported in-state tuitions for illegals in his home state. Mitt and Rudy ran sanctuary cities in their home state/cities. The only candidate left that will be strong on the border and illegal immigration that has any chance in this election is Fred Thompson. And South Carolina is his last stand. If Thompson does not win in SC, kiss the only candidate who will take care of the illegal immigration problem goodbye.
