The Lego turns 50

Posted by John Stoehr on Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 8:57 AM

It's the 50th anniversary of Lego's. How many hours have I spent building imaginary creations with this wonderful toy? Countless. Since its invention in Copenhagen on Jan. 28, 1958, the company has made a staggering 400 billion Lego elements, or 62 bricks for every person on the planet. Lego's influence is so pervasive that even Eminem loves them. Well, at least his music was used in this wonderful short film using Lego's and the hip-hop star's alter ego, Slim Shady, to recast Shakespeare's tragedy of Macbeth. Enjoy.

WTF...this explains why South Carolina has the lowest S.A.T. scores in the U.S.A. Geez, who was this chick's English, Social Studies, and Geography teachers? Isn't South Carolina one of those "red" states. I have always thought that republicans were dumb!

I'm 52. Born and raised NYC (maternal side) but my paternal side hails from Oconee County, SC and environs for over 200 yrs. Seeing this is saddening-and not because of the SC connection..It is truly an indication that the education system of today has failed. Think about it--the people teaching todays' teens were themselves the 'MTV generation'. Absolutely no care or concern about what happened yesterday, only how to get famous tomorrow. Well Ms Lauren Caitlin Upton is indeed famous NOW, and the even sadder by-product of her inane rambling is that while she lost the pageant, she most likely will cash in on it on some tv interview or People Magazine or similar drek. Sad times indeed all-around.

you know what, she is such an idiot. i come from South Africa and there is abso lutely nothing wrong with our country. has that idiot ever been to my country? we are everyday people just like americans and surprise surprise we do go to school and our geography knowledge is probably ten times better than americans. the reason why alot of americans can't read maps is because they are lazy twats that get everything hand fed to them. a pity though, FYI South Africa might be a third world country but we should have the status of a first world country. im proud to say I'm South African!!!!!! Get your facts straight you blonde bimbo!

Reply to Odey, Blonde Bimbo is a little harsh. She was just repeating any countries name she has recently heard in the news. You can tell by the look on her face she was scared beyond measure. Am glad you are proud to be from South Africa, you should be. Let me just say I am proud to be a US American.

Don't defend her, poor thing. She's just stupid. Anyone ever remotely involved in the teaching of this child needs to be found and beaten. They especially need to find her geography teacher. Someone has to be held responsible for this. End of story.

the quetion was "Why do you think that most Amerians can't locate the US on a world map". They did not ask her to locate the US on a world map, so why the harsh criticism? Can you honestly say that you have never been unprepared, or that you have never stumbled on a question? I hardly think anyone of us is perfect.Give her a break and the next time you make a complete fool out of yourself and people give you grief about it, think back to this poor girl and how she must have felt knowing that she totally bomb on national television.

reply to Jessica: now if she just brings up countries she must make sure she has her facts straight, if i knew i wa going to be live on television for everybody to see i would prepare myself. and if she misunderstood she should've asked. my point is that she mustnt talk about things she knows nothing about. we do have povrty here but so has your country or am i wrong?

The only thing more moronic than her answer and the question they asked her, is the Teen USA Contest itself. Why would anyone expect a better answer from her when our society values such contests. We should be more ashamed of the contest, the values of Americans, than her answer.

Okay, let's give her a little break. Hey, she's only 17. She's gorgeous and has probably gotten by on that all of her life. But I'll bet she's not a stupid as she appeared to be. Rather, she's ignorant, because no one ever demanded anything from her other than to look beautiful. This could be a turning point for her, as it might open her eyes to the fact that she really doesn't want the whole world to see her as a vapid, spoiled little girl. Maybe she'll take an interest in developing her brain to where it becomes as attractive as the rest of her. And the rest of her......whoa boy!

I think everyone should give the poor girl a break. I can imagine that it is very scary to stand on that stage on national t.v. and have someone ask you a question. I would challenge all of you who poke fun at this girl to go on national tv and speak and see what comes out of your mouth. I think that all you who are so quick to be judgmental are just as stupid as you guys say she is. So she made a mistake, big deal. May the one without sin cast the first stone. Its people like you who make fun of others who give Americans a bad name. Some of us have compassion and kindness in our hearts. You guys should be ashamed!!!

You people down there need to think about new ways of dating and courting ... like, you know, outside the fambly and stuff. All that inbreeding can't be good. Maybe this is why y'all lost that war a while back.

I agree one of the real problems is the pageant itself and what it represents. Why on Earth would we want to sexualize and objectify children - not to mention adults - with these ridiculous events? NBC should be ashamed for airing it. Americans should be ashamed for watching it. And the people of South Carolina should see this as a wake up call to snap their kids into shape! All Americans should do the same. Do we really want our country to get dumber and dumber? Wake up people!

Reply to Odey--Another reason for you to be proud of South Africa--I am part of a clinical trial of a medical device that replaced degenerated discs and vertebrae in my neck, and I have my life back to normal for the first time in 10 years. The device was invented in South Africa by SA doctors, and is in clinical trials in the US. I expect the FDA to approve it in 2 years for US use, even though it's in use in SA and Europe now. Your country has produced many great medical professionals, and is a beautiful country as well. This poor little bimbo--who will undoubtedly cash in on this gaffe--is sadly uninformed as well as poorly educated. I do kind of feel sorry for her--saw her on the Today show and she clearly isn't very articulate.

Justin--above-- Old saying-"there are no stupid questions--only stupid answers". As for 'don't blame the teachers'- you need to watch Jay Leno asking 20-somethings--some of them teachers, ferchrissakes!--when the Civil War happened, who attacked Pearl Harbor (they might think it a case of assault) etc. This years incoming frosh at San Diego State U failed when asked 'what year did the 9/11 attacks happen?" Kids my age now--52BC--before computers--were educated in American history by age 12 or so. Nothing to google. Our teachers taught us well and inspired us to seek further knowledge on our own by reading books and newspapers, which I have adhered to ever since. I walk into the local library NOW and of all the teens I see, not a one is reading a newspaper or book..Instead they are all using the computers to access MySpace et. al. Popularity and fame are the name of the game. None seem to give a hamster fart about what is really going on and what previously happened be it yesterday or 200 yrs ago. My rant, but there is truth in what I say.
