Journal: Schlesinger's view of multiculturalism

Posted by John Stoehr on Mon, Dec 3, 2007 at 2:45 PM

Quoted in today's New York Sun from an editorial regarding the donation of 300 linear feet of papers to the New York Public Library written by the late historian and adviser to JFK, Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.:

Another of the benefits of the acquisition is that it may provide scholars insights into Schlesinger's views on multiculturalism, which, we learned from a speech he gave to the Massachusetts Historical Society on October 16, 1991, at the 200th anniversary dinner of the Society, were also at odds with much of the contemporary left. The bow-tied historian railed against the twin threats of the deconstructionism imported to the American academy from literary critics of France and "militant multiculturalism," which, he warned, "has placed the idea of a common culture in jeopardy."

"When multicultural education means, as the zealots insist, that our public schools should teach subjects like history and literature not as intellectual disciplines but as emotional therapies, multiculturalism becomes a different matter. When it means the assumption that ethnicity is the defining experience for all Americans, that the point of education is to make people feel good about their ancestors, that we must discard the idea of a common culture and instead celebrate, reinforce, and perpetuate separate ethnic and racial communities, then multiculturalism not only betrays history but undermines the theory of America as one people," he warned. "Multicultural history in this militant vein promotes fragmentation, segregation, ghettoization."

My brother is a Captain in the Fire department, I pray for him and the other firefighters everyday, esp. when I see a fire truck racing to a fire. We are all blessed in Charleston County to know that there are men and women who are willing to lay down their lives for US. Seems like what we pay them should reflect that, besides just our thanks.

My husband is a member of the Ciy of Columbia Fire Department and when I hear of such tragedy striking the brotherhood of firemen, it truly saddens me. I say a prayer for all firemen and women everynight that God will protect them and their families. Firemen/Firewomen are truly an important part of our society and I think people forget sometimes just how dangerous this profession is. These men and women lay their lives on the line to protect us everyday. My thoughts and prayers are with all the Charleston County Fire Departments and their families in this time of tragedy. So, next time you see a fire truck passing you by, just remember they are making a difference. I encourage you to visit your local fire department and thank them for what they do. I know the brotherhood will truly appreciate your thankfulness.

I was a volunteer firefighter (most of the firemen in the west are volunteer) out west for many years. It doesn’t make sense to most people to go into a burning building but firemen are not most people. It takes a different perspective to put saving someone else before yourself. I don’t know the details of this fire but I do know firemen and they were probably doing what they loved the most. Fighting fire. This is a tragic loss for your city and we’ll be praying for you and the firefighter’s family.

My prayers and thanks are to all firefighters in Charleston and surrounding areas for the sacrifices and ultimate sacrifice made by your brave souls. To their families, my prayers are with you as well. The sacrifices you make on a daily basis, people will never realize unless they have walked in your shoes. Please know that people from all over the country (I'm from Tennessee) are praying for you all. As a frequent visitor to SC and Charleston, you have never met strangers and have extended kindness to all who have visited you. May these prayers offered, help repay some of the kindness extended to many.

9 lives lost to save one. It's a non written clause in their job discription, 'you may have to die so another can live'. They take the job regardless. God Bless ALL Firemen. And their families. Deepest, deepest sympathies to the entire area of Charleston. I only pray time can ease your pain.

As a Volunteer Firefighter for Wilson's Mills Fire Department in Wilson's Mills North Carolina, I personally want to offer my prayers and condolences to the families and to the town of the fallen Firefighters. For those of you that don't know, there is a passion among Firefighters that when that TONE goes off they are on the truck and in route within minutes and we never know if this will be the last TONE will hear. With that Passion a Firefighter gets on scene and witnesses people running out of a fire and Firefighters running in too, most of the time to protect the lives and property of people that they don't know. It is a shame that it takes a tragedy like this to make citizens and local government aware of how dangerous a profession this is. So the next time you see your local Fire Departments raising funds to purchase up to date equipment do not hesitate to contribute. Remember it maybe your life, the lives of your loved ones or property we are called to protect and you would expect us to be there and do whatever was necessary to save lives or property. God Bless these fallen Firefighters may their souls rest in peace and to the families of those fallen Firefighters may God give you strength and courage to endure the days ahead. The Firefighters Prayer When I am called to duty, God Whenever flames may rage, Give me strength to save some life, Whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child, Before it is to late, Or save an older person, From the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert, And hear the weakest shout, And quickly and efficiently, To put the fire out. I want to fill my calling, And to give the best in me, To guard my ever neighbor, And protect his property. And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life, Please bless, with your protecting hand, My children and my wife. AUTHOR UNKNOWN

As a 911 dispatcher, I know the feelings of fear and apprehension we feel as we hear the Battalion Chief yelling at the firefighters to back out of a burning building due to imminent collapse or other dangers. My heart broke as I read the article this morning and I am so sorry for the devastating loss that Charleston has suffered. My family and I will definitely step up and make a donation to help those families struck by this tragedy. Those men are heroes and deserve high honors.
