New Fiction Writing Group

Posted by Nick Smith on Tue, Oct 2, 2007 at 9:27 AM

Some days I like to kid myself into thinking that I’m a real writer. On those rare occasions, I need to kickstart my tale-telling ideas. There’s no better way to do that than elbow my way into a writers’ workshop. So I toddled along to the County Library’s inaugural Fiction Writing Group on Sept. 11, overseen by writers Sean Scapellato and Carol Peters. These guys take their writing seriously. That’s not to say that they’re solemn about it – the leaders and dozens of scribes who turned up were surprisingly jovial and talkative.

In subsequent monthly meetings Scapellato and Peters will cheerfully cover the nuts & bolts of writing, throw a few exercises out there and discuss techniques. They won’t be critiquing work in the sessions. Mostly, they’ll be motivating the writers to get stuff done.

The Fiction Writing Group is at the library's main branch on Calhoun Street. Judging by the popularity of the first gathering, it's going to fill up a couple of rooms this month. The group is sponsored by the library and The Lowcountry Initiative for the Literary Arts (LILA). For more information on meetings, call 805-6930.

Happy to know about the new group. I've had a very good experience with a smaller group here in Charleston, and I'll definitely give this one a look as well.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that this was actually for Throwdown with Bobby Flay. Did anyone go?
