The President's Taste in Literature

A few weeks ago I wrote a column on the 50th anniversary of the publication of To Kill A Mockingbird. I loved the book and so do millions of Americans. And I am pleased to see that President Barack Obama shares our taste in great southern literature. The Associated Press reports that he picked up a copy of Mockingbird as well as The Red Pony for his daughters during a family vacation on Martha's Vineyard.

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. — President Obama began his 10-day vacation on a studious note Friday, stopping at a Martha's Vineyard bookstore to buy books for his daughters and himself, then playing golf.

Among the president's purchases at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore, according to cashier Leroy Hazelton, were To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and The Red Pony by John Steinbeck.

For himself, the president bought Freedom by Jonathan Franzen, aides said. It's not on sale yet, but the store gave him an advance copy.

Three hours after his bookstore visit, Obama was at Vineyard Golf Club, teeing off under bright sunshine and temperatures in the low 80s

I think President Obama's choice of literature would be the Quran since he bowed down and kissed the hand of a Saudi King(I could just imagine Ronald Reagan doing that),did nothing to extradite the Lockerbie bomber back to the U.S. for blowing an American passenger jet out of the sky(I don't even think Jimmy Carter would have gone for that)and the final slap to the face of Americans;allowing a mosque to be erected near ground zero in NYC.Next,he'll allow the Japanese to build a memorial to their pilots in Oahu for bombing Pearl Harbor.

TOO BAD HE DIDNT PICK UP A COPY OF THE "RED HERRING" AKA THE HEALTH CARE BILL. SINCE NO ONE ELSE IN WASHINGTON HAS READ IT, HE WOULD BE MUCH MORE INFORMED. HIS LIKES AND DISLIKES ARE APPARENT. YOU WOULD THINK THAT MR. MOREDOCK WOULD HAVE MORE TO SAY ABOUT "THINGS UNREAD" THAN OBAMA'S LOVE FOR THE CLASSICS, HE'S WHAT NOW, 46, JUST GETTING AROUND TO SOME GOOD OLE SOUTHERN LITERATURE. HOW ELITIST, HOW HARVARD, HOW OBAMA.

motoman, I think you should check your facts on President Bush and the Saudi King. Before President Bush left his office the King of Saudi came to the Crawford Ranch in Texas and he got the King by the hand and kissed him on the cheek..You are one the people who do not read to inform themselves ,as to President Obam's religion. He is a christian. While the Islamist in New York are insensitive about where they want to build their Mosque, as long as the building codes are followed any church can be built. In this country we have seperation of church and state. BWT go to church and get rid of your hatered.

A more important point is that anywhere any church is built is a piece of property forever off the property tax rolls, so the rest of us have to pay more to support religions that we would rather not.
