Nikki Haley: Transparency for Thee, But Not for Me

Posted by Will Moredock on Fri, Jul 16, 2010 at 1:35 AM

Nikki Haley has made herself famous and won the GOP gubernatorial nomination with her pledge to make state government more transparent. Just one problem: She refuses to release her House e-mail account for public scrutiny.
In its July 11 editorial, The State newspaper says Haley talks a good game on government transparency, but does not seem to know how to walk the walk. Take a look.

It always seemed absurd to suggest that Rep. Nikki Haley’s House e-mail account would contain a smoking gun to prove a sleazy blogger’s claim that he had an affair with the Republican gubernatorial candidate three years ago; if it did, then surely he as the recipient could have produced those e-mails himself. The idea became even more absurd after House officials said messages are routinely erased after 180 days.

That’s what makes Rep. Haley’s refusal to release her public e-mails to the public so disturbing.

Ms. Haley, after all, is not just someone who thinks government transparency is a nice thing. Her one claim to fame as a legislator is her crusade to bring sunlight to a legislative process that for too long has protected lawmakers from accountability rather than giving the voters information they deserve. Her entire campaign for governor is built on that push for openness, for letting the public in on the Legislature’s secrets, for eliminating the special perks and privileges legislators give themselves and their friends.

Does that apply only to the direct expenditure of public money?

Does it apply only to other people?

Imagine if the blogger had claimed that he helped Rep. Haley secretly funnel millions of tax dollars into a green-bean museum and steer tens of millions more in cushy no-bid contracts to her campaign donors, and that messages on her government e-mail account would back up his claim. Is there anyone who would not be demanding that she make the correspondence public?

What is she hiding? Why doesn’t she want us to see the messages she has been sending as she juggled her campaign for governor with doing her job as a legislator?

This is also the same newspaper that coordinated with the Barret campaign during the runoff...

One sided as usual, this paper and others are all one sided. Ever hear about the new Black Panthers? Don't want to talk about them, do you.

How about the President, did'nt he say the same thing.

There is no reason to release the emails. During deliberations, I'm sure our lawmakers play "devil's advocate" to get a full understanding. Or at least I hope they do. It's called Critical Thinking. You have to understand both sides of the argument. But, what happens if one of those emails gets leaked? Her intent could be taken out of context and used to destroy her credibility. What matters is how they vote! I want to know how they vote. If they vote the way I would, then I'll support them. If not, then I won't! Quit trying to drum up trouble!

Why won't she release the transcripts of her emails? Doe she have something to hide? I agree with the article, if you spout off that you want transparency and preach to the choir about responsibility and openness, then you should follow your lead. Only goes to show that she is just another typical politician with things to hide from the public. All South Carolina needs is another incompetent, hypocrite in the governor's office.

OK, all you who think Haley should release her personal e-mails - you release yours first! Anyone can make allegations. That does mean the victim of slander must completely give up all personal privacy? Anyone ever heard of "innocent until proven guilty?" Haley does not have to prove she is innocent - the accuser has to prove she's not.

What protects me as a constituent from having my email to her or her reply to me (with my original email embedded) released to the public? I haven't done anything wrong but I still don't want other people violating my privacy by reading my email to her, looking at my home address, etc. This is akin to voter intimidation.

If there are no criminal or other investigations with proper orders from a judge, why the one-sided demand? Stinks like establishment politics as usual from one of the biggest and most corrupt players in the game: Der Staat (aka "The State" newspaper).

And if it is necessary in Der Staat's opinion to have Haley release her emails, then why not demand to have Sheheen's emails released to the public as well?

Emails are MINOR compared to Ms. Haley's CLOSED DOOR meetings with SC business leaders yesterday. Some of those same business leaders, being a part of the SC Chamber of Commerce who has endorsed Vincent Sheheen.

It's also MINOR when a company paid Ms. Haley THOUSANDS of dollars as a "consultants fee" and later admitted they did it to "gain access". Ms. Haley did not claim that until the 11th hour during her nomination process with Gresham Barrett.

I am starting to see a pattern of "Sanford-ism" in Ms. Haley's campaign. From the concern she shows with her national celebrity rather than South Carolina to the unwillingness to work WITH the SC Legislature to move South Carolna forward, it's a telling and an untrustworthy pattern. Senator Sheheen looks better and better to me and to the Republicans for Sheheen.

If the emails were sent using one of the state’s email accounts, then they should be released. The U.S. Supreme has ruled that an employee who uses his employer’s email system to send personal emails has no defensible expectation of privacy. In other words, the employer may see the emails. The same should apply here, Nikki’s ultimate employer in this case being the public.

More troubling, however, is today’s report by the AP that on July 15th Haley had a meeting with 50 business leaders, but the press was barred. What’s she saying to them that the public isn’t allowed to hear?

WWhat a load of hogwash!!!!! If an acquaintance or a friend of mine (or an enemy for that matter) e-mails me at my office (I work for the state also), I will respond FROM THAT ADDRESS------even if it is a "personal" matter! (That self-same individual MIGHT also be a client/customer/constituent of mine) and the difference may NOT be "transparent". Without a legally-imposed court order, invading one's expectation of privacy, simply to sate curiosity, is WRONG!!!!! is VILE!!!! I say, let's let the accusers produce the "smoking gun" first, BEFORE casting stones!!! Remember, the "glass windows" MAY be yours!!!

Will Mordock seems to have an agenda of writing baseless allegations against Haley. First of all the chamber of commerce is not some monolithic homogeneous body which is ONLY representated by its leadership which has endorsed Sheheen.
Large number of business leaders are upset at this endorsement and have requested a meeting with Haley. So how come meeting with them becomes the issue of transparency??

Secondly any one can make accusations against any one else. Does it mean the accused his to prove his or her innocence by releasing all emails or other personal data without the accuser having provided a shred of evidence. So if I make wild accusations against Mordeck, is he supposed to get distracted from his life aand spend all his time in proving his innocence and showing me all his emails??

GaryO1,

If you want to read the contents of Mr. Moredock's email account, I suggest you do what many others have done to gain access to his innermost thoughts.

You should immediately sign up for daily email blasts from MoveOn, HuffPo, DailyKos, Democratic Underground, Media Matters, and FITS news.

Why listen to a parrot, when you can monitor the owners of the parrot instead?

It saves you time and there's less squawking involved.

Yeah, and while she's at it, make her provide a birth certificate, She's an Indian plant and I say she was born in Calcutta, so she's not qualified to run for Governor.

Do you guys not get it?
Moredock represents the shrill apologist-racist Left fringe viewpoint, HUnter represents the paranoid veiled-racist Right fringe. They write their columns only to piss somebody off so those readers keep coming back to see the new outrageous columns to get pissed off again. We're just pawns to build circulation and advertizing revenues(profit). No real thinking person really believes all this crap they write - it's just hyperbole to build circulation.
So you say I'm a sucker to take it to heart, too? Nah, I'm just trying to piss them off.
