Posted by Will Moredock on Sat, Mar 21, 2009 at 4:15 PM

The Charleston County Democratic Party unanimously passed a resolution on March 18 endorsing the Employee Free Choice Act. Give three cheers to the Charleston County Democrats and take a look at my February 11 column on EFCA.

Resolution on

Support  for freedom to form unions:

The Employee Free Choice Act

WHEREAS, the Charleston County Democratic Party believes that the right to form a union is a fundamental human right and that workers should have the freedom to form unions and bargain collectively without employer interference; and

WHEREAS, Human Rights Watch has documented that the United States has a poor record with respect to protection of these important rights, and

WHEREAS, the failure to protect freedom to form unions is exacting a heavy economic, social and political toll on workers and communities across the United States, such tolls including but not limited to suppressed wages, decreased job quality, worsened economic inequality, erosion of support for public education, the unraveling of public and private safety net protections, the denial of justice and democracy in the workplace, and decreased political participation.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Charleston County Democratic Party urge Congress to co-sponsor and actively support the Employee Free Choice Act

The Employee Free Choice Act is important to revitalizing the American middle class. Corporations routinely fire workers for trying to organize unions. It is time to restore collective bargaining rights in this country and give a voice to employees.

Unions have outlived their usefulness. Only union executives make out when new unions are formed. Ask some of the people who lose their jobs when unions are formed if they are enjoying their new "rights". Employees have the right to form unions now, but can't be harrassed into signing a card. They are allowed to vote in private instead. What a concept.

If you want to know exactly how well a union works go directly to general motors. The unbelievably high wages that people with no high school diploma or college degree are making ran that company in to the ground. To make matters worse they have extended benefits and the right to retire at 45 with most of their that include a large percentage of their pay and healthcare. That basically means they are being paid by the company in retirement almost as many years as they were being paid while working. Its glorified social security and it is no wonder both are going broke.

Corporations should have the right to fire employees for forming unions. Why do you think BMW, Kia and Nissan all built plants in the south? No unions. People don't realize that all a company does is try and pass the added labor expense on to the consumer. Add to that the sub-par reputation that American cars have and you have companies that have to operate on slimmer margins. It is very difficult to do.
