If you were driving on the Don Holt Bridge Monday morning around 2:30 a.m., you might have seen a confusing spectacle: A woman in a gray Volkswagen Passat headed east in the westbound lane, swerving between lanes and forcing other motorists to pull over to avoid a head-on collision.
According to an incident report from the Charleston Police Department, an officer was responding to an accident on the I-526 bridge when he saw the car coming at him "at a high rate of speed" and "weaving all over the roadway." Traffic was light, so the cop turned around and chased down the errant VW, pulling it over after about a quarter-mile.
The officer notes in the report that he could smell alcohol inside the vehicle when he made contact with the driver, and he says he found an empty beer can in the passenger seat. When he asked the driver if she realized she was going the wrong way, she replied that she didn't; she also said she didn't know where she was coming from, according to the report.
The cop cuffed the driver, who was identified as 36-year-old Alice Ashley Hewitt of Mt. Pleasant, and put her in the back of his vehicle, at which point Hewitt started complaining about pain in her feet and EMS medics were dispatched to the scene. While waiting on EMS, the officer asked Hewitt if she would consent to a field sobriety test, to which she replied, "No," then "Yes," then "Wait ... what?" According to the report, when he asked Hewitt a second time, she replied, "Yes," then "No," at which point the officer noted that Hewitt was "too intoxicated to make any sort of sound decision" and decided to stop asking about the sobriety test.
By this point, firefighters and Berkeley County EMS personnel had arrived, and Hewitt reportedly said the following things to the people present:
"Why the fuck am I here?"
"My boss is going to have all of your asses."
"Get the fuck off me."
"Who the fuck are you?"
"I'm a fucking paralegal; I work for a lawyer."
After EMS checked Hewitt's blood sugar and blood pressure levels, the cop told Hewitt she was under arrest on a charge of reckless driving and read her Miranda rights. Back in the cop car, Hewitt reportedly had the following to say: "Do you know who the fuck I am? Look up the Hewitt family." When the officer said he did not know of the Hewitts, she reportedly replied, "The Hewitts who determine everything ... and I gotta fucking pee, undo me."
Hewitt arrived at the Charleston County Detention Center around 4 a.m. and was released by 1 p.m. the same day.
