Brooke Mosteller was (kind of) right

Census shows 18 percent of South Carolina's homes are mobile

If you live in South Carolina and have a Facebook account, you've probably already heard about Miss South Carolina Brooke Mosteller's sassy self-introduction at the Miss America pageant Sunday:  “I’m from the state where 20 percent of our homes are mobile because that’s how we roll."

Her figure was actually not far off. According to 2008 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 17.9 percent of the Palmetto State's homes are mobile. That's the highest percentage in the country, ahead of No. 2 New Mexico and No. 3 Mississippi.

Maybe Mosteller was just using outdated 2000 Census data, which showed that 20.3 percent of the state's housing units were mobile homes. The Census also found that 0.6 percent of the state's housing units lacked complete plumbing facilities, 13.2 percent were worth less than $50,000, and 26.8 percent of the housing units required rent payments of 35 percent or more of household income.
