Two new hotel buildings and an extensive renovation of a historic church building are up for approval at this week's Board of Architectural Review meeting. The meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on the third floor of the Charleston County School District building (75 Calhoun St.).

At 67 State St., owner Jay Keenan and architect Stephen Ramos (of LS3P Associates) are requesting final approval for new construction of a four-story hotel to be dubbed The Spectator. The hotel, which would be visible from the City Market, would reportedly have 41 rooms and is being pitched as "a very high-end property."

At 79 Wentworth St., owner JRA Family LLC and architect Robbie Marty-Patterson (of Neil Stevenson Architects) are requesting conceptual approval for new construction of a six-story hotel over parking. In April, Stevenson told the City Paper that the Restoration on King hotel was planning to add 35 rooms by expanding to the vacant 6,000-square-foot retail building. “We’ve been working on this for a while, and then the economy fell,” Stevenson said at the time.

And at 78 Morris St. (formerly 9 Dereef Court), owner The Gathering at Morris Square and architect Luda Sobchuk are requesting final approval for renovation of a relocated church building. The building, which the developers estimate was built circa 1905-1915, once housed an African-American praise church. The chapel fell into disrepair and vandalism, and it was relocated when developers started building residential units on the site. The proposed renovation includes a new hand-crimped metal roof, new foundation walls, a new entrance staircase and wheelchair ramp, and a new cupola and steeple if the originals cannot be located.
