  • A-Rod will take the field tomorrow night at the Joe.

Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who's been on the sidelines for all of the 2013 season so far after offseason hip surgery, will play "at least three innings" for the ol' Charleston Riverdogs during Tuesday's game against the Rome Braves, the team said via Twitter this afternoon.

In the past week, controversy over A-Rod's return to the field reached a boiling point when Yankees GM Brian Cashman responded to Rodriguez's tweet that he had been cleared by doctors to play again, telling ESPN New York, "When the Yankees want to announce something, [we will]." Cashman continued, "Alex should just shut the f--- up." Well, the Yankees decided to make that announcement today, saying that he's been cleared to play and will begin his rehabilitation assignment through the team's minor league farm system with a stop at the Joe on Tuesday.

A-Rod may be the most high-profile assignee in the team's history, with current major leaguers like Josh Hamilton, B.J. Upton, Carl Crawford, and Delmon Young passing through the locker room in recent years. A Riverdogs representative reached via phone confirmed Rodriguez would make an appearance in the game and that while plenty of tickets were available at that time, they were said to be "selling at a brisk pace."
