TV news satirist Stephen Colbert dropped the act Wednesday night to say a tearful, heartfelt goodbye to his mother, Lorna Colbert, who passed away in Charleston last week at the age of 92. "When you watch this show, if you also like me, that's because of my mom," Colbert said before telling his late-night audience a little more about her. Colbert praised her resilience, noting that the mother of 11 survived her husband and two sons, who were killed in a plane crash in 1974.
An obituary from James McAlister Funeral Home calls Lorna Colbert, "an accomplished artist, a church leader, a businesswoman, a supporter of the arts and a woman whose profound faith was apparent in her daily life."
In lieu of flowers, the Colbert family says donations should be made to Medical University of South Carolina Foundation for the Dr. James W. Colbert Endowment Fund, named for Lorna's late husband.
