If you're observant, you'll notice there's a new header at the top of this page. Sorry, folks, no more Rock Bottom entries. We're starting a new blog for the News section and calling it The Battery. You might recognize those historically-accurate-looking mortars, by the way, from the real-life Battery at the tip of the Charleston peninsula.
So what's the difference? It's subtle. We'll still be bringing you all the madcap antics and eye-popping, did-Dick-Harpootlian-really-just-say-that moments of South Carolina politics. But this will also be a place for breaking crime and fire news, City Council agendas, and announcements about political rallies and protest events.
The old name, Rock Bottom, came about in the fall of 2009. Then-Gov. Mark Sanford had recently had a rock-bottom moment on national TV news with his teary-eyed confession of an extramarital affair, and the quality of political discourse in the Palmetto State appeared to have reached an all-time low. While the name had a nice edgy feel, it didn't really fit with some of the breaking-news stories we began posting on the blog in recent months.
Everything changes, folks, even in the musty halls of the ol' City Paper office.
