Hot Ticket: Spoleto sell-outs

Get 'em before they're gone

With opening night just a few hours away, you can bet the Spoleto box office phones are ringing off the hook (we know — we've tried calling a couple of times already). And while you'd think that would mean that your chances of getting tickets to some of the most buzzed-about productions are slim to none, it turns out that the outlook isn't as bleak as you'd think.

One important note: Spoleto shows don't technically "sell out." Instead they have "limited availability," because sometimes the festival will open more seats — as they've already done this year — or even add additional performances if the demand is high enough.

Jared Grimes, the tap-dancing phenom from Jamaica, Queens, has extremely limited availability for his four shows (May 24-27).

The opening weekend performances of the operas, Matsukaze and Le Villi and Mese Mariano, are close to selling out, says Spoleto's Jessie Bagley, but the later performances still have some availability.

And Le Grand C, the French circus act, has been so popular that Spoleto just today opened up more seats to the performances. And according to Bagley, they're good seats, too — those who snatch them up will be even closer to the stage than anyone who bought in advance. Sometimes it really does pay to wait till the last minute.
