He's not a thug rapper... how many thugs wear cardigans dumb ass

While I don't condone what West did. He seriously needs a muzzle at times. I most definately don't condone ignorance such as someone calling Kanye a "thug" I mean seriously. Some may think that's a little racist!
So let's not continue the ignorance...how bout we educate ourselves before sounding like an even bigger prick! K???

What makes him a thug? His skin color? West is a fancypants Momma's boy. He's a baby, sure, but he's no thug. Calling him one makes you appear racist, as long as we're throwing charges around.

what the hell is wrong with him????? he made himself look like an absolute idiot!!!! If the roles were reversed and it was a white man took the mic from a black woman to say a white woman had the best video during her thank you speech, the white man would have crucified. why do we have a double standard in this country?? if you want racism to go away, it has to be eliminated from all sides. please someone make sure Kanye gets at least a verbal lashing. if the world is to change it certainly needs to start with the people who are in the spotlight. lots of kids look up to you Kanye and this is what you show them. way to go

I think it was smug and race may be a factor, but I do have to say I think both you and Mr. Moredock may be right. I also have to say that Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak is a very refreshingly original album. This is the VMAs and not nearly as important or prestigious as a presidential speech to both houses of congress, so I'm not exactly sure what the correlation you're making is. Democrats never yelled "You lie!" to Bush when he was at his most bald-faced. I have to admit Joe Wilson sickened me. Not for lack of decorum, but for his irrationality and for being out of touch

To be fair, the author did not call Kanye a thug. He called Kanye's persona (One's public image or personality, as distinguished from the inner self.) a thug rapper, which is equally erroneous but not racist. The author also put the word thug in quote marks indicating that he realizes that Kanye is not a true thug.

Kanye's actions were maybe a bit racist. Would he have interupted the acceptance speech of an Alicia Keys to shout out to Beyonce? Was he upset that a white girl beat out his friend for the award? Or was it just the whiskey he was seen lugging to the show (or was it all of the above)? But who really cares if Kanye West doesn't like white people? He's an entertainer, not a politician.

Joe Wilson's outburst alone might not register as racist, but looking back to how he treated Strom Thurmond's illegitimate daughter Essie Mae in the news (not to mention his veneration of the legacy of pro-segregationist Thurmond to begin with) it starts to add up.

There's little doubt about many of the Tea Baggers, though (I love that term, by the way: it's not often you have a political movement named after a sex act; what's next, the Cincinnatti Steamer movement?). You can't show up at rallies with signs and interviews about how the "Muslims are taking over" or canoodle with Birthers convinced that Obama couldn't possibly be a natural-born citizn (I mean just look at him!) without there being not-so-subtle undertones of racism.

You folks can hide behind wordplay all you want, but the only people you're fooling is yourselves.

To address an earlier commment, I honestly believe that if a white man had interrupted a black woman , the backlash would have been the same. This really isn't about race at all. It's about the fact that Kanye West is an asshole. People have been interrupted during awards speeches at the VMAs before. I remember when the guy from Rage interrupted Fred Durst. It was 2 white dudes. Suddenly a black man gets involved and it becomes a race issue! Suddenly Kanye is a thug, attacking poor, defenseless young white ladies. Is that necessary? Really the problem is that he's rude. Coming as a black woman, please don't make this about race.

Kanye's image is more of a preppy rapper...the antithesis of a thug. Kanye is a jerk....but to compare Kanye's behavior to Joe Wilson or the thinly veiled racism that fuels SOME of the tea baggers and birthers is a reach.

Add Kanye to the list of other black male- white women haters.Just like the others, he can't stand the thought of them possibly becoming a bigger success than themselves.Remind you of the Jamie Foxx comments about Mylie? Beyonce is a classy woman with a classy act.She just didn't win this award.Remember what happened to Don Imus? Why shouldn't Kanye and Jamie be put in the same asshole category as Don Imus and be made just as responsible for their remarks as Mr. Imus?

If dumb White people would stop buying his albums and singing his songs then he would realized that a good portion of his money comes from the people that he hates....He has stated before that white people should only use certain slang like bling and hottie after a year or so so they dont act "black"...So now we need his permission to use certain words?

Was it "cruel" to embarass some young, taking the mike out of her hand and implying that she didn't really deserve the award that MTV voters gave to her?
I'd argue that is was.

Did Kanye "rob" her of a very important moment in her life when she should have been carfree and happy, thanking those who supported her? Yes, he did.

That's 2 out of 3 definitions of what a thug is. Face it, Kanye West IS A THUG in a cardigan! It's not about his blackness, it's his manifest stupidity, his arrogance, and his willingness to pick on innocent people in order to indulge his childishness.

This is a simple case of an egomaniac out of control. If his Mother can see him I'm sure she's rolling over in her grave. Kanye isn't a "thug" I'm sure that because he's black and involved with "urban" music the easiest way to paint him and every other black male artist is that he's a "thug rapper". It is racist to label him as "thug rapper". Kanye is just an unfiltered @sshole who has run his mouth on more than one occasion. It's too bad that Taylor Swift had to be on the receiving end of his mindless arrogant egotistical rants. It would be a good idea for Kanye to take his ego, trampy girlfriend, and fly to a secluded island so we can get a break from him for a year. The isolation away from the public eye might do him some good.

No one called Kanye a thug. He simply stated he carries on the persona of a "thug" rapper. I think many of you need to go back to English class and learn what quotations represent.
On another note, I am quite sick and tired of people defending him and saying it is preposterous to think his actions were based on race. This columnist is exactly right. You are the same people who are saying Rep. Wilson's comment was racist. Are you kidding me? He called out Obama and said "You lie!", because, well, he does lie.
For Kanye to go up there and take that microphone away from Miss Swift was based on his immaturity, lack of self-control and his bias toward black artists.
Another poster was right on the money when he/she stated "If Alicia Keys had won, would Kanye have done the same thing?". No, he wouldn't have. He would've been pleased to see a woman of color up there winning the award.
And while we're talking about this, what was so special about Beyonce's video? I don't particularly have anything against her, but her videos are all the same; she's just jiggling her buttocks and thighs around while cocking her neck.

All in all, get over it, it was racist and we all know it. Some of you may be hesitant to admit it, but if a white man had done that to a young black girl and alerted the audience that another white woman should've won....there would be hell to pay. He would be labeled a racist within a mere 10 seconds of setting his feet on stage.

kanye was just being Kanye. If you follow this guy from the New Orleans comment about BUSH he likes to speak his mind. There is definitely something about him feeling persecuted. Perhaps when he grew up he experienced Racism. I wouldn't doubt it as it was all over where I grew up.

mr. west's performace at the vma's (due to henessey) was OUTRAGEOUS!!! and being a fan of both taylor swift and mr. west i was shocked! i dont think he's a thug but i do think he is an arrogant asshole who seems to like attention and i also believe that if he was TRULY sorry when beyonce would've given taylor the mic then he would've appologized then or at least after the show. i dont think he is truly sorry. and i also believe mr. west is racist. only because of comments that he has made on radio shows before. which is truly sad.

The whole problem with both Kanye and Mr Wilson is the same: Neither actually THOUGHT nor had any self-control before they let those words fly. So, I'm wondering....now that they both have apologized to their "victims", can we just let it go? Certainly both of these individuals have done other things that should have allowed you to form an opinion about them before now.

When did the word "thug" become racist? Being from the New York City area I have used and heard the use of "thug" with regard to both black and white people. As to Kanye being racist, who cares? He a grade A a-hole, it doesn't matter why.
As to who can be called a racist, clearly it's only white men. Look at the outrage when Glenn Beck (fellow a-hole himself) said Obama didn't like white people. Meanwhile the same people who were outraged called Bush a racist for 8 years.
