Haley leads latest poll, Bauer in big trouble

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Thu, May 20, 2010 at 11:34 AM

State Rep. Nikki Haley (R-Lexington) is leading in the latest Rasmussen poll with 30 percent of the vote. It's a surprisingly commanding lead for Haley, who was in fourth in fundraising support just six weeks ago. But national endorsements from Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin have certainly elevated her star power.

It was long expected that Haley and Congressman Gresham Barrett would be fighting for a second spot on the run-off ballot. It looks like Barrett will now be battling for that slot with Attorney General Henry McMaster, who had long been seen as the frontrunner. McMaster was at 19 percent and Barrett was at 17 percent. Eighteen percent of those polled were undecided.

There wasn't an ounce of good news in the poll for Lt. Gov. André Bauer the fourth person in the race. Support for his campaign fell from 17 percent in early March to 12 percent two months later. Worse, nearly one in five Republican primary voters polled have a "very unfavorable" opinion of Bauer, that's compared to 7 percent very unfavorable for Barrett and 5 percent for Haley and McMaster.

I think it was probably Palin's endorsement, more than Romney's, that has given Haley the boost in the polls since Romney came in a distant 3rd place in the 2008 SC primary. Romney endorsed Haley on March 16th, if his endorsement was a factor at all, it seems that it would have shown up in the polls prior to now.

Matter of fact, I didn't even know that Romney had endorsed Haley until I read it in an article discussing Palin's endorsement.

RE: Andre Bauer:

I think his drop in the polls is because of his own arrogance? Remember when he would not stop for the police until he got to the capitol building?

Also, look closely at his sad face in his ad. He looks like the kid who just got caught by his teacher pulling the pig tails of the girl in front of him. (I think he is tryng to look strong, sincere and determined......WRONG)

He is where he is because of himself. The Peter Principle caught before being fully applied (elected.)

Amazing news isn't it. Especially with so many respondents to this same blogger's recent post, "Gubernatorial quitter Palin endorsing Nikki Haley", predicting that Palin's endorsement would be the kiss of death for Haley. Hmmm!

Let's see, she comes straight out of the gate slinging mud in t.v. ads, a judge orders her ads funded by ReformSC pulled due to questions of legality, she has the endorsement of a govenor who quit mid-term to promote a book, and she's leading the polls. Amazing, or just sad?

Haley has many plusses, but just try to get her to give a straight answer on tax reform, namely: "Are you, or are you not, in favor of the only specific proposal to abolish the state's income tax, the South Carolina Fair Tax?" Such a question could be preceded by referencing Disney's announcement that they'll close next year their Jonesville (Union County) distribution facility and consolidate those operations in Tennessee, a state with no personal income tax.
