Rawl makes it official: He'll challenge DeMint

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Mon, Mar 8, 2010 at 11:27 AM

Charleston County Councilman Vic Rawl officially announced his campaign this morning for the U.S. Senate.

He’ll be challenging first-term incumbent Sen. Jim DeMint, a Republican who has become a national sweetheart of the conservative movement.

DeMint has become synonymous with Republican obstructionism regarding the Congressional healthcare debate, telling conservative activists last summer that defeating healthcare would break Obama and be his “Waterloo.”

Rawl says he's campaigning to end the partisan battles and find consensus-building solutions.

“I am not an ideologue,” he says. “I do not revel in gridlock.”

For example, Rawl noted that there are reforms to the processing and collection of medical records that have strong support, but get overlooked in the larger healthcare debate.

The Democrat also listed a string of priorities, including jobs, education, healthcare, the national debt, and ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rawl spent 26 years in the National Guard, eight years in the state House of Representatives, more than a decade as a Circuit Court judge, and he was elected to Charleston County Council in 2008.

Supporting DeMint is like shooting yoursef in the foot. Why would you do that? As for as being in the minority, that is what elections are for. If the citizens of South Carolina would vote for some one who votes against their best intrests then I guess they get what they deserve. DeMint voted against funding the military including armored vehicles for our fighting men and women in Afganistan and Iraq 4 times. He voted against pay rasies for the military 4 times. He voted against unemployment compensation for our unemployed citizens. He voted against job bills while we have 12% unemplyment. He voted against health care reform while 25% of us are without heatlh care insurance. The list goes on and on. DeMint votes against the best intrests of South Carolina to support his right wing philosophy. He also is a member of The Family which is a secrete religious organization with beliefs far from main stream Christianity. DeMint doesn't represent us. He represents himself.

Progressive people need progressive options. So, support me for Senate in 2010.

Will I win? Doubtful.

Will it be a fun ride? Yes, indeed.

I am not entirely kidding about this.
