A federal judge ruled today that the "I Believe" license plate should not be issued until a challenge made by  the Americans United for Speration of Church and State gets its day in court. A written opinion isn't expected until Monday, but District Judge Cameron Currie issued a preliminary injunction on the plates and instructed the state to strike information on ordering plates from state websites.

Our favorite part from the Americans United release:

Americans United also pointed out that some legislators openly admitted that they would not vote for similar plates for minority faiths.

Asked by a reporter if he would support a license plate for Islam, Rep. Bill Sandifer replied, “Absolutely and positively no…. I would not because of my personal belief, and because I believe that wouldn’t be the wish of the majority of the constituency in this house district.”

We gave our suggestions for future I Believe plates earlier this year.
