Riley, Other Mayors Want a Piece of Potential Stimulus

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Mon, Dec 8, 2008 at 6:09 PM

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and other mayors from across the nation went to Washington today to request some of the money from the next stimulus package that has been promoted by President-elect Barack Obama.

Local projects being pressed by the mayors include improvements to local schools, the CARTA bus line, Charleston Water System, The Charleston Housing Authority, and other local agencies.

The Cooper River Bridge redevelopment area, in need of millions of dollars in infrastructure improvements, could also be a potential benifactor, says Michael Maher, director of the city's Civic Design Center. Maher notes that, right now, the city isn't expecting anything, but preparing for the opportunity if it materializes.
