I don't get it. Sen. Lindsey Graham was the first to say no to Gitmo prisoners getting transferred to Charleston. Congressman Henry Brown has introduced legislation to keep them from being transferred to our local Navy brig. The bring has housed other suspected terrorists.
According to the Post and Courier, Brown says Charleston is a horrible idea.
"While it is located on a military base, the brig is also less than a mile away from a highly populated civilian area," Brown said. "Bringing these extremely dangerous war criminals, deemed too high a threat to be sent home, would add an unnecessary terrorist threat to our community."
Richard Todd made a good point on WTMA this morning that putting these guys here in Charleston could lead the federal government to put more money into securing the region. We'd add that it would likely add jobs to the area.
Brown suggests housing Gitmo detainees at maximum security prisons, but we don't know how that would work considering they have not been tried yet.
The brig's history of treating past terror suspects may play a role in the decisions about putting these folks here.
Brown says he doesn't expect the bill to pass, but he wants to start a discussion. We prefer our discussions to start with a little less fear-mongering.
