Fritz Frozen in the Primary?

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Digging for something unrelated on The State's site and I stumbled across this:

Former U.S. Sen. Ernest “Fritz” Hollings twice spurned opportunities to endorse his party’s presidential nominee, Illinois U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, in remarks to reporters at the University of South Carolina on Friday.

“I’m selling books,” he said. “I don’t want to get into politics.”

Hollings, known for an irreverent and sharp tongue, has never been shy about speaking his mind.

In thanking the university for honoring him, he unleashed that tongue on a range of political issues — the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the budget deficit and what he sees as an ongoing trade war between the United States and other countries.

Hollings did say Friday that he wants Democrats to win in November, as the party tries to increase majorities it holds in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate.

The story notes that Fritz was an early supporter of John Kerry. But he worked with Kerry, maybe he's just holding out the endorsement because he isn't as close to Obama.
