Hanna: Leaders Look To Ike

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 2:56 PM

Local leaders have a message for residents: They're ready for Tropical Storm Hanna.

But they also have another message: You ain't seen nothing yet.

"It's a whole new dimension," says Mayor Joe Riley of Hurricane Ike, a strong storm that has, to this point, followed a similar path as Hanna (and we all know what it did to Tina Turner). Ike is currently moving toward the Bahamas and is expected to take a turn north, possibly impacting the east coast by mid-week. "We're monitoring it very carefully," Riley says.

As for Hanna, Riley and other officials say the area is prepared, even though it may just be some high winds and persistent rain that we'll struggle through come Friday afternoon.

"It's so important that we prepare each and every time," Riley says.

Charleston County Schools, Charleston County, Folly Beach, and North Charleston offices will be closed Friday, with only essential staff working. The City of Charleston is expected to make a determination on staffing later today.

While officials noted most folks should be able to safely monitor the storm from home, they suggested that anxious worriers go ahead and leave town if they've got somewhere to go.

"Don't put yourself through the trauma," says North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey.

The next update will be around 6:30 p.m.
