Hanna: Hurricane Watch, Charleston at Opcon 2

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 8:45 AM

Just got word the county is going to Opcon 2 at 10 a.m.  as a landfall at the North/South Carolina border seems likely overnight Friday.

The OPCON 2 level means a disaster or emergency situation is in effect, County staff is at a maximum preparedness level, and there is full activation of the County's Emergency Operations Center.

Charleston County is currently under a Hurricane Watch. The public needs to monitor their local news media and be prepared as Tropical Storm Hanna moves toward the state's coastline. Tropical storm force winds are expected to reach the state’s coast Friday, early to mid-morning, from Edisto Beach northward in South Carolina. However, there is still a chance that hurricane force gusts could be seen on the shore Friday afternoon to evening in the watch area. The threat of tornadoes is low due to being on the west side of the storm. The storm surge is expected to be two to four feet above normal tide levels.
