Local Dem Candidates Expect "Change" to Help Down the Ticket

We're just getting into our 2008 local primary coverage (after a pleasant few months out of the political circus), but thought we'd tease with one interesting fact that's popped up so far.

In interviews with Anne Peterson-Hutto and Eugene Platt, the two Democrats looking to unseat Rep. Wallace Scarborough in November, each suggested that this year in particular was an exciting one for Democratic hopefuls and it's impossible not to see the presidential candidates' message of change in their comments.

"2008 is a particularly good year to run," Hutto says. "A lot of people are fed up with the status quo."

Platt has good reason to be hopeful on his own merits — he lost by a scant 40 votes in the 2006 general election against Scarborough, but he referenced Obama in particular.

"Nationwide, people are embracing the notion of change," he says. "If Obama is on the top of the Democratic ticket, my stock will be way up there."
