Two high profile stories today on the crumbling unity (if you could ever claim it was unified) of the South Carolina Republican Party.
First, the Post and Courier runs a generic story about "The List," Gov. Mark Sanford's rumored hit list of fellow GOPers. For the record, I'm pretty sure House Speaker Bobby Harrell isn't raising money for his 2008 House run. That money's likely to get banked for a statewide run in 2010. Surprising that they didn't mention that.
While that story omitted former spokesman Will Folks' alleged involvement, the State's mid-day report about GOP Caucus drama was happy to stroke Folks' ego.
Rep. Heyward Hutson, R-Dorhester, created an uncomfortable moment at this morning's House Republican Caucus meeting. Hutson, responding to a post on Web site FITSnews.com, told the caucus that Republicans should be on the same team.According to FITSnews.com, House Majority Leader Jim Merrill was running the campaign of Hutson's opponent, Jenny Horne. Merrill has denied that he is running Horne's campaign - he ran her campaign to fill the seat last year - and grew red-faced as Hutson spoke.
After the meeting Merrill and Hutson had a heated exchange, and Merrill said they had already talked about the issue in private and assured Hutson that he wasn't working against him.
