McCain Ready To Beat a (Particular) Woman

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 5:00 PM

What is it about the South Carolina coast that gets Sen. John McCain in a musical frame of mind. First came the "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb" Iran joke. Now, at a forum earlier today in Myrtle Beach, McCain told the crowd that he would beat Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., "like a drum."

Unlike the Iran jab, this one appears calculated.

"That's a line I used frankly in 2000 when I said I could beat Al Gore like a drum. It got good coverage then," he said.

Of course, its coverage will be diluted this time around considering the Clinton campaign's hostage standoff later in the day. Maybe he can recycle it for the next debate.

Rudy Campaign Gets Rough With Lowcountry Reporters

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 4:45 PM

Rudy Giuliani was in Okatie today to speak with seniors at Sun City Hilton Head. It sounds like Giuliani was avoiding questions about security spending as mayor of New York. Or maybe it's the candidate's fuzzy math that the New York Times reported in a piece today. Or maybe it's that recent poll that shows Giuliani falling behind other top-tier candidates (to be fair, other polls aren't quite so troubling for Rudy). Anyway, he was not in a mood to talk.

From CNN:

The mayor's usually accommodating staff furiously – and in some cases physically – tried keep reporters away from Giuliani as he walked away, shouting at and jostling with cameramen and photographers from local and national media organizations in attendance.

No members of the audience asked Giuliani about the story during the town hall meeting. Most of the questions were about illegal immigration, a flashpoint issue in this booming coastal area near Hilton Head.

From MSNBC:

Giuliani, who is normally friendly to reporters, bristled past them, and campaign staffers were unusually physical in keeping the press away. Several campaign aides told campaign reporters to return to the press area, and some of his security detail manhandled reporters. On other occasions, reporters have been free to video Giuliani as he is shaking hands and signing autographs after events, and he often informally takes questions from reporters.

Hillary N.J. Headquarters Hostage Standoff

I've been watching the unfolding coverage. Talked briefly with a state spokesman for Hillary when the hostages where still inside the building (it appears that they have been released). The local folks seemed shaken at the unfolding situation and couldn't comment on any action at South Carolina campaign headquarters. That said, it since appears this is a man acting alone.

That Perfect Christmas Card For Dems

Doctored mug shots of President Bush and his senior aids in the run up to the war in Iraq are on display in the main branch of the New York Library.

The exhibit, "Line Up," is the work of artists Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese. Each Bush administration member clutches a clapboard, as in a standard mug shot, with the date of his "arrest" - a day when each made "incriminating" statements regarding the Iraq war.

Roberta Waddell, curator of the library's print collection, said the exhibit was in keeping with a historical tradition dating back to 18th century England, calling the mug shots a "relevant example" of political commentary. The exhibit runs through Jan. 27.

Doors open for the Obama rally at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, at The Colonial Center in Columbia. The event is free, but tickets are required and available through the campaign at barackobama.com or at the local campaign office (724-1108). Seating will be on a first come, first serve basis.
