Emmys: The Last Great Reason to Avoid Television Until May

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 12:34 PM

I'm not saying that Ryan Seacrest single-handedly killed The Emmys last night — he obviously had a lot of help. Here's basically how it went. He came out and tried his standard routine on American Idol, where he looks around and points out celebrities in the audience. The problem, of course, being that he was at the Emmys, so instead of five celebrities (and that includes Clay Aiken), there were hundreds of celebrities (and that includes former Vice President Al Gore). So, Ryan saunters over to the Desperate Housewives section and chats up the ladies.

It's then that you realize they have the celebrities in stackable plastic chairs — which is fine if you're talking about Eva Longoria, but Helen Mirren is a dame for pete's sake! And then there was the surround seating that left many of the big winners of the night sitting behind the stage all night. As James Spader put it, "These are the worst concert tickets I have ever had." And, lets remember, he was in Stargate.

A few exciting awards at the beginning, including Katherine Heigl's win for best supporting actress when she noted that her mother told her she didn't have a chance.

One award provided a clip montage from Colbert, Daily Show, Conan O'Brien and Real Time that was the funniest moment of the night.

And the excitement ended with Sally Field getting censored when she "put the God in front of the damn" in her comments about mothers waiting for their sons to come home from the war.

In the end, it was The Emmys' worst ratings in nearly a decade. Thanks, Ryan.

Too bad you didn't have Clay Aiken there. Probably would have gotten much better ratings.

Amen! Clay would have boosted those ratings!

Come on! Quit blaming Ryan Seacrest for something that's been going on for years. The "Emmys" and other award shows have been taking on water like the Titanic and its just a matter of time before they sink. Sending Seacrest in to try to save the ship is like giving the captain a bucket and telling him to start bailing. Do you really think the Titanic could have been kept afloat if the crew had just tried harder???? Ryan Seacrest is good at what he does but even he can't perform miracles. I had some advice passed along to me that might just help the awards shows. "Never pass up the opportunity to keep your mouth shut." And also "Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps his mouth shut." Some of the stars would do well to remember this advice when they are tempted to spout their political views and crude language. We watch the awards shows to be entertained, and not for politics. There are a plethora of political opinion shows out there to choose from if that's what we wanted. So what's it going to be??? Pass out more buckets or fix the leak???

No it is not all Ryan's fault. As for me and my family, we are tired of the made up and fake people who are a part of and run Hollywood. It is not real life and it darkens the door of the real image of a true lady and the real image of a good decent loving man. Their examples for families are sick and unrealistic. Where is our real life example in all this? Someone who cares and gives back to society and teaches the world true kindness and love? To sum it up, it is all so fake and why bring it into my home on TV. Including the foul mouth of a so called star, Sally Field. We have enough bad examples to deal with. Watching her take the name of God in vain on national TV was the best example of what we don't want to bring into our homes and let our families be a part of. No, we did not watch the show, I simply viewed the clip and was very glad I did not let that crap in my home. Again I ask, where are our good examples? Where are those who make a difference and better this world? Certainly not on the Emmy's. Jan

I agree don't blame it all on Ryan. He did his best. Awards shows have been on the decline for years. It would have been nice to see Clay Aiken. Excellent singer and a very funny guy.
