In the presidential campaign season, the field of candidates is represented by two separate and arguably unimportant groups: the candidates who fill the space between Rudy Giuliani's comments during debate after debate and the one candidate who makes the race for the GOP nomination interesting.
Yes, Fred Thompson, Mr. Never Too Late To Enter The Race, will be announcing his candidacy next week, but he has backed out of a Charleston visit after catching criticism for not visiting Greenville, the home planet of conservatives (or the nutty compound, depending on your politics).
Yesterday, Thompson announced that he'd be visiting Charleston and Columbia on the last two stops of his announcement tour. That move put Republican bloggers in a tizzy.
Rule No. 1 when trying to win the South Carolina primary as a Republican presidential candidate: If you do nothing else, you MUST campaign in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties.
Their emphasis, not mine. Well, the schedule has been changed. This late in the campaign, I'd say that Thompson needs to go anywhere that will offer him airtime.
UPDATE: Editing changs noted in comments. As Ana Marie Cox of TIme (formerly Wonkette) says, I've got editors — hundreds of them.

Rule #1 when writing for a newspaper... learn how to spell... or hire a copy editor... The word is "separate" not "seperate" and "Mr. Never To Late To Enter The Race" should be "Mr. Never Too Late To Enter The Race" Rule #2 when writing for a newspaper... Vote Fred Thompson 2008!
Fred will be welcomed wherever he goes in SC. He is a great conservative! VETERANS everywhere are signing up for Fred @ http://Vets4Fred.net
Fred Thompson should have Jeb Bush as his running mate. That would be a sure win for Fred.
Fred Thompson: Are you serious? I started out so excited about this election and the candidates and now I'm just getting more and more jaded about the whole thing. Then when I hear that people are really convinced that Thompson/Bush would win (if he's being serious), I just feel like crying. As for backing out on Charleston, I'm going to reiterate what I've always said and say that if the candidates ignore young people in this election (by not visiting college campuses), they're alienating a potential hot spot of fresh ideas and excited voters.
"Rule No. 1 when trying to win the South Carolina primary as a Republican presidential candidate: If you do nothing else, you MUST campaign in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties." LOL! Well there probably is something to that. Senator Thomp..., er make that Mister President, spoke to an overflow crowd here in Greenville this morning, and got a welcome like you wouldn't believe. I hope he got a similar reception in Columbia. I feel certain he will be back, and visit Charleston, Myrtle Beach & other important locales. He knows South Carolina is KEY for him to get the momentum for other primaries. I was very impressed with his candor. He will make a fine president.
