This question is for my brothers and sisters in the much-maligned world of journalism.
In particular, it's for the men and women who have been writing about the Steubenville rape case.
More specifically, it's for anyone who has advanced certain salacious claims about Jim Parks, the Steubenville High School football superfan behind the Roll Red Roll website, the one that was apparently recently hacked by Anonymous.
And my question is this: Did anybody take the time to fucking look at Mr. Parks alleged emails?
You know, the ones that the Anonymous subset, Knight Sec, reportedly obtained and released on LocalLeaks.
The ones that other media outlets — like the Atlantic — have mentioned without challenging LocalLeaks' accusations.
The ones which led LocalLeaks to make the startling claim that "several pornographic images of extremely young women, quite possibly underage" were allegedly found in Mr. Parks' email and that one "difficult to explain image ... appears to show a scantily clad under-age student" that appears to "have been surreptitiously shot in the girls bathroom at the high school."
For some reason, I have my doubts. Because if any of those news organizations had seen those photos, they would have seen that there is reason to believe that LocalLeaks is not being entirely honest about Jim Parks and the contents of his emails.
One, Parks emails don't seem to contain pornographic images of multiple young women.
Two, they don't seem to contain photos of extremely young — or underage — women, either.
And three, there is no reason to believe that these photos were shot by a peeping tom douche bag in the Steubenville High girls restroom. None.
The way it looks to these eyes, the shots are all of the same woman, a woman who is most assuredly legal.
In my opinion, these look like the sort of photos that a girlfriend or wife would send their boyfriend or husband. They certainly don't look like the work of a voyeur. Hell, they don't even look like fake voyeur porn.
If you doubt me, head to LocalLeaks and judge for yourself. Chances are you don't know me from Adam, so you don't have any reason to trust me. I'm cool with that.
And, to be honest, you have no reason to trust LocalLeaks either. After all, one can only assume that they looked at these photos, determined what they were, and then seemingly decided to make a completely baseless accusation, one that has not only humiliated Jim Parks but humiliated the poor woman in the photos.
I don't know about you, but my heart goes out to her. She did not deserve this. She has harmed no one here. She is an innocent party that had nothing to do with alleged August 11 rape. And yet the folks at LocalLeaks apparently think it's acceptable to treat her this way.
They feel that it's OK to splash images of her naked body on their webpage and allow anyone and everyone to download even more photos of her — photos that were probably only meant to be shared with one person and one person alone.
They have a word for what LocalLeaks, KnightSec, and Anonymous have done to this woman. And it's called rape.
