Will we see the error of our ways in 2013?

The Eternal Optimist

Posted by Chris Haire on Wed, Dec 26, 2012 at 3:59 AM

You may not believe this, but I'm an optimist. I believe deep down in my empty, thimble-sized heart that we are good people and we desperately want to do the right thing, but too often we're thwarted by our need to satisfy short-term desires. We crave. We lust. We envy. And we suffer, at the hands of ourselves and each other.

Be that as it may, we also grow, as individuals and as people. We see the errors of our ways. We see how those mistakes impact us and those around us. We try to fix them. We change. Which is why I welcome the new year and share my hopes and dreams with you:

I hope that we will no longer tolerate a foreign policy that has mistaken warmongering for protecting our nation.

I hope that we will no longer accept the callous murders of countless innocent men, women, and children and call it collateral damage in the seemingly never-ending War on Terror.

I hope that we will no longer ignore the horrors that our interference in Middle Eastern affairs has caused our own people and the rest of the world.

I hope that we will no longer ally ourselves with cruel dictatorships.

I hope that we will no longer give arms to those who do not share our beliefs in democracy and human rights.

I hope that we will no longer heed the words of those who believe that American exceptionalism comes not from our belief in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but our ability to police the world and wage a decade-long global war.

I hope that we will no longer listen to anyone anywhere who talks about the world in terms of "good guys" versus "bad guys."

I hope that we will no longer act as if gun violence is an acceptable everyday occurrence.

I hope that we will no longer ignore the fact that the Second Amendment calls for the regulation of guns.

I hope that we will no longer blame Hollywood for our woes.

I hope that we will no longer act as if Hollywood is entirely blameless.

I hope that we will no longer watch cable news networks that allow paid party shills to pose as journalists and pundits.

I hope that we will no longer support talk show hosts who cut off those who give dissenting views.

I hope that we will no longer believe that fairness in reporting is treating both sides of an argument equally, even when one side has a clear disdain for facts.

I hope that we will no longer tolerate a two-party system in which one party must oppose everything the other party proposes, not out of principle but because that's simply how the game is played.

I hope that we will no longer elect politicians who have never taken sex-ed classes.

I hope that we will no longer applaud politicians who leave office early for a higher-paying gig.

I hope that we will no longer applaud presidential candidates who threaten to cut spending to PBS.

I hope that we will no longer act as if Big Bird can't take care of himself.

I hope that we will no longer allow a political party to use racial fears and racial code to rally voters.

I hope that we will no longer remain blind to the fact that we have allowed our own racial fears and prejudices to determine who we vote for.

I hope that we will no longer give credence to any asshat who demands to see the president's birth certificate.

I hope that we will no longer support those who proclaim that an election was stolen simply because their candidate lost.

I hope that we will no longer vote for politicians who believe the federal money should be used to treat their erectile dysfunction but should not be used to pay for birth control.

I hope that we will no longer demand that candidates tells us how often they go to church, how much they tithe, and whether or not they really believe in any of that stuff anyway.

I hope that we will no longer act shocked whenever someone burns an effigy of the president or dumps a bobblehead of him in piss.

I hope that we will no longer accept the hollow apology of politicians and pundits who make a racist remark and then only admit they're wrong when they come under fire.

I hope that we will no longer act as if homophobic remarks are any different from racial slurs and that those who say them should face the same consequences.

I hope that we will no longer value the opinion of anyone who says that all crimes are hate crimes.

I hope that we will no longer treat corporations as people.

I hope that we will no longer act as if wealth trickles down.

I hope that we will no longer act as if government assistance is a bribe.

I hope that we will finally stop letting the bastards turn us against each other.

I hope that we will finally call them on their bullshit.

I hope that we will finally stand up for what is right.

And I hope that 2013 is the year this finally happens.
