S.C. Superintendent Mike Zais on Conn school shootings: You know, violence happens

"A reminder that we live in a world that is not free of violence"

S.C. State Superintendent Mike Zais has released a statement on the Newtown, Conn., school shootings that have reportedly left 27 people dead, many of them school children. And it's the kind of statement that's sure to appeal to the gun rights posse. Basically, it comes down to this: Shit happens. (The added emphasis to the copy below is my doing.)

“On behalf of educators throughout South Carolina, our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Sandy Hook Elementary. I pray God will give these families comfort in the days and weeks ahead.”

Zais continued, “South Carolina educators and school resource officers work hard every day to ensure safe school environments. Today’s tragedy is a reminder that we live in a world that is not free of violence. We must also be mindful of our surroundings and report suspicious activity to school leaders or law enforcement authorities.

“To the parents and guardians of South Carolina: hug your children a little longer when they arrive safe at home from school,” said Zais, “And say an extra prayer for the community of Newtown tonight.”

"Today's tragedy is a reminder that we live in a world that is not free of violence"? Hmm.

Next time, you put your kid on the school bus or drop them off, remember this line and repeat it. I hope you find comfort in it because I sure as hell don't.
