New WTMA host Tara Servatius previously under fire for posting racist photo of Obama

New host to lead Morning Buzz

Many, many years ago when I was the editor of Creative Loafing and then Metrobeat in Greenville, I had something of a journalist crush on Tara Servatius. And rightfully so.

At the time Servatius wrote a take-no-shit column in the Charlotte Creative Loafing. In it, she managed to take on both the Left and the Right and kick in a few teeth in the process. She was an intellectually honest badass, unlike most columnists, who are either pay-to-play party shills, starfucking opinionists who have gained entrance into the Beltway country club, or just trash-talking drunkards.

Since then, my opinion of her has changed.

For a while it looked as if she was taking off as a talk radio host, and as much as I disliked her increasingly turn to the dittoheaded Right, I was still glad that she was succeeding.

But then I began hearing strange shit. A former colleague called me about Servatius and said she was palling around with white supremacists. I doublechecked and discovered she had spoken to the League of the South, a neo-Confederate group that believes the South should secede from the United States. Not good.

However, when Servatius found her way into the national news in March, well, that was it.

See, at the time Servatius was the host of a popular right-wing radio show in Myrtle Beach, as well as a blogger for the John Locke Foundation, a libertarian think tank in North Carolina. Trouble came calling for her after she posted a photo of Obama in S&M gear with a bucket of fried chicken between his legs. Then she denied the racial implications of the photo, telling the Charlotte Observer:

I was searching for a picture of the president in drag to illustrate his Southern political strategy of courting young voters, a majority of whom support gay marriage,” Servatius said. “Regrettably, I didn’t think about the racial implications of the picture when I posted it. I simply don’t think in those terms. Unfortunately some people do. To me, fried chicken is simply a Southern cuisine. So the picture seemed perfect to illustrate Obama’s Southern strategy.

Yeah, right.

Eventually, she resigned from the Foundation but remained on Myrtle Beach's WRNN.

Well, earlier today, 1250 WTMA announced that Servatius will be the host of their morning show starting Oct. 3, replacing Richard Todd, who left the station many, many months ago. And if you can overlook Servatius' Obama-fried chicken photo controversy, she's a good pick, perhaps even a great pick. She's smart and well read and, frankly, just the sort of voice that The Morning Buzz has been lacking since Todd's departure. Of course, that is if you can get past that photo and that even shittier apology.
