Inside the North Charleston Coliseum, an enthusiastic crowd of white Republicans cheer and jeer a dwindling lineup of white guys at CNN's Thursday night debate, while inside the press room, a crowd of white journalists stare at a huge projection screen on which the debate is being broadcast. No one is bothered by the fact that the debate is taking place elsewhere in the building, perhaps only yards away. Out of the 200-plus journos, I count three black reporters, and they are all curiously sitting toward the back of the room. If this is what the Fourth Estate looks like in this country — nearly 50 years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — then the republic is doomed.
Before the debate proceedings begin, I feel a malaise hovering over the pack of reporters. Perhaps they are depressed because they realize that they are just as lily-white as the audience that they will later mock over cocktails following the debate. Perhaps it's because they have given themselves over to the Realdoll charms of nearly lifelike simulation — they are at the debate but then again they are not. Perhaps it's because they know that when the night has finally come to an end, they will return to yet another carbon-copy hotel room and carve out a few minutes to themselves watching SportsCenter or jerking off to internet porn. Make no mistake, once the debate begins, this depressed mass of hive-mind drones will try to act as if anything about any of this surprises them, and later their editors will ignore the fact their writers compose the bulk of their reports before the night's show had even begun.
And believe you me, it is a show. Or so says the hype man that CNN sends out on the stage before the debate begins. He cracks jokes and instructs the crowd of crackers on how to behave: they need to turn off their cellphones and be respectful. He encourages them to clap their hands, even going as far as to mockingly chastise them for not pounding their paws loud enough. Even the event's moderator, CNN's John King, promises "two hours of boom," an acknowledgment perhaps that what we are about to see is not democracy in action, but something more akin to a World Wrestling Entertainment pay-per-view or a smoke-machine-and-lasers Sunday service at a non-denominational mega-church.
The bombs go off during the first exchange when Newt Gingrich feigns outrage after King asks him about the It political story of the day: an allegation by Newt's ex-wife that he asked her for an open marriage.
I for one don't believe Gingrich's conversion, and I'm baffled that any of my fellow South Carolinians do. I'd be willing to bet that Newt's newfound devotion to Jesus has less to do with his willingness to abandon his philandering ways and everything to do with the fact that he's a 68-year-old fat ass who nobody wants to fuck. Despite all of this, Gingrich is rising in the polls, and South Carolinians are climbing right on top.
Not that Mitt Romney is any better. If there are actually people out there who need to watch this donkey show in order to figure out who to vote for, then Romney's days as the GOP frontrunner have likely come to an end. When John King asks the governor if he will release all of his tax returns like his father George Romney did, Mitt replies with a "maybe," and the audience inside the arena boos. More telling, inside the press room there are gasps. Something unscripted has occurred. Something that was truly unexpected. My fellow journalists are only momentarily fazed. They quickly gather themselves and get back to penning their regularly scheduled reports in which they act as if they are providing a service to democracy by reciting conflicting poll numbers and quote-whoring the night's catchphrases. ¡Ay, caramba! To the Batmobile, Robin. Pow, right in the kisser.
Once the debate is over, the lily-white horde of reporters comes face to face with the lily-white horde of campaign staffers and supporters, guys like our own Jack Hunter and former South Carolina GOP chair Katon Dawson. For some reason, the press corps still treats Dawson with respect despite the fact that he's an asshole who was a member of an all-white country club in Columbia and who was the state campaign chair for Rick Perry, a racist dickhead who owns a house out in the boonies called Niggerhead Ranch.
And that more than anything symbolizes the GOP's problem: they not only still allow bigots among their ranks, but they think one of them is fit to be chairman of the Republican Party or, even worse, the president of the United States.
Yes, they can trot out Tim Scott, and Tim Scott will shuck and jive like they ask. He's good at that. And they can call Nikki Haley to the stage to dazzle the sideshow crowd like she's an exotic beauty from the Orient who will give you a lap dance for a dollar. But the GOP is still a whites-only club.
I wish I could say the press corps was different, but I can't.

It is sad to see people such as yourself assulting white people is such a dispicable way. Thank God not all people are rasist like you or I would not have been blessed by a family that I truley love and adore. My loved ones call me Grandma, Mother, Antie and the best Mother in law in the world. Why do you have such hate for us? My family risked thier lives to help your blood famlies excape the bonds of slavery and it breaks my heart to know the atrosities brought to you by some raced based white people but please do not hold us all accountable for thier misbehavior. The same can be said about others as well. Please don't judge me by the color of my skin, I don't judge you by yours however I do find it offensive that you are judging me for the color of my skin. Please put your hatred of me and my family aside and see us as we are, A FAMILY!
LOL!! I can tell you haven't been here before (besides the fact your bio says you just joined). Sorry to burst your bubble, but Chris isn't the color you think he is.
Glad I was not the only one who was blinded by the sea of white last night. It was truly disgusting. Looked like a membership meeting for a restricted country club.
Contrast it with the wide range of diversity you see at Democratic gatherings.
The difference is stunning.
The only thing baffling is the fact that you are employed. Your tirade is all too familiar and as usual just plain stupid.
It is not the Republicans that want to make everyone wards of the government, which in the end robs people of self-esteem and dignity not to mention freedom. As Ben Franklin once said - "those willing to sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither". The Democratic party once proud and noble has been hijacked by the socialist party. What a shame.
No one wants to admit the Republican party is largely made up of angry white males and their female counterparts. Truly scary sight.
Here's what's always resonated with me:"Not every republican is a racist, but if you find a racist, chances are you found a republican." Gingrich's performance, and the crowd's reaction in SC should be enough proof for anyone. Read about the "Southern Strategy" if you need more proof.
Obviously there is not a very diverse crowd, but the writing that is used to describe the scene in this article is on par with what you would see at a local county jail. Makes me wonder about this newspaper, and just how it got any attention whatsoever. Fire this writer, or send him back to school.
That was such a fun read. First time reading anything from you Chris, good stuff. And I'm a fiscal conservative whitey. But I have to say I went to a Ron Paul rally in Charleston 4yrs ago and it was a surprisingly diverse crowd, shockingly different from what the media was telling us.
Whenever a Black person dares to become a prominent member of the Republican Party, the Democrats vilify him. General Colin Powell, Dr. Condi Rice and Jusge Clarence Thomas have all received the "race traitor" treatment. Herman Cain, once the Republican frontrunner, is only the latest casualty.
Over a century ago, Democrats started a civil war because they thought they had the right to own Black people. Apparently they still think they do.
Gingrich- "I think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run of for public office and I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that,"
Cry me a river, Romeo. What a flippin hypocrit! Tell it to Bill Clinton there you crass jerk. I'm sure his 1st wife was havin a party on her deathbed when he was asking for a divorce while #2 was waiting in the wings. The party of morals my ass.
My take:
Gingrich: cool under fire, tremendous ego, tremendous intellect, full of shit.
Santorum: true to himself. unforunately, his self is naive.
Romney: smooth, to the point of greasy. "maybe"??? did he really say that?
Paul: genuine. really enjoyed it when he got the opportunity to talk. just didn't happen enough.
Not exactly fair-minded reporting, perhaps, but insightful and delightfully well-written, which is the most important thing in a blog of this kind, I do believe. Sparkling with verve, bite, and just rabid enough to justify the blog's subtitle. Fine piece of crafts(person)ship, young man!
It is simply unbelievable that the "moral majority" doesn't want to discuss personal shortcomings of candidates in a year in which the republicans who vote for Gingrich are running against a sitting president who has been flawless in his personal and family life. For those of you who think Gingrich has repented, you have got to be kidding me. He is a hippocritical, ego-maniac, who has zero percent support from those who served with him in Congress. After being stripped of his speakership, fined $300,000, 2 divorces, 2 known cases of adultery, he uses his position to sell access to congress. We have a president whom we might not agree with on every issue, but he won't embarass us. Newt, on the other hand, does not have enough self control not to.
Ron Paul will be the best president for all races. He will pardon hundreds of thousands non-violent drug criminals many of which are black.
Where you parade idiots like Newt on stage who is an obvious rascist, and you say to the public this guy is possibly our guy, then this is what you get. A crowd that supports him or at least recognizes him a brethren (Republican) and you get a stigma of also being ignorant to racial and social issues. Either refuse to allow these people a chance on your media netwroks, in your races and primaries...OR read articles like this and admit to being apart of this mostly ignorant and racially insensitive group. Of course they are white, and of course any minority who represents a party who backs a guy that says some of the things that have been said by Newt then your an idiot...here is just one of probably 30 examples of a current republican nominee saying or representing something racially retarded --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjHa1JHiHFU
Having witnessed the cynical political press first-hand, this piece is as close to the truth as you will ever see published. As for old white men being in control of things, that's the bloody reality the author is merely pointing out.
Mr. Haire,
Your column is spot on, especially the part where you wrote: "And that more than anything symbolizes the GOP's problem: they not only still allow bigots among their ranks, but they think one of them is fit to be chairman of the Republican Party or, even worse, the president of the United States."
My opinion about the GOP began its downward trend during Newt's tenure as Speaker of the House. a time when people like Rep. Randall "Duke" Cunningham, a Republican and Jack Abramoff, a convicted felon. Unrelated cases, but Newt in particular fanned the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the impeachment proceedings as a diverionary tactic. The publics attention was focused on this debacle, not issues such as budget or jobs. Had the media asked the hard questions, maybe Newt's infidelity would have been outed, too? During this time, greed and corruption was taking root in the halls of Congress with lobbying activity going viral and these sleazy, rich white guys running our government. Funny, Jack Abramoff quietly did his 2 or 3 years "hard time" and moved on, but c'mon, does that mean it will deter others from doing similar deviant actitivities?
Liberals - Where do you people come from? You don't have the mental capacity to engage in civil intellectual conversation without name calling, such as calling people racist (which in and of itself is racist). Racism is a condition of the heart, not a product of a political party. Just because someone disagrees with you point of view does not make them a racist.
Go Newt - let's change the country so all people living here can once again enjoy the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. Freedom is at stake for all Americans regardless of their race or national orgin - the choice is clear - do you want a socialist society or a free republic. It is just that simple.
I laughed at this article until tears ran down my cheeks. Right on, the best piece I have read this season.
PS I am a white conservative old man.
You sir, are a racist. This was a CNN debate. Two of CNN's top political analysts who were there according to my stream of the events are Roland Martin and Donna Brazil, both black. According to 2000 Census data, ~70% of Americans are white and 12% are black or African-American, so you are likely to see mostly white people. Its not about race, its about having an incompetent President who was elected because he is black. That is racism. Herman Cain also was not qualified for the job unless skin color is now a real qualification. We can't have another affirmative action President, we need someone who has the experience needed to do the job. You need to put down the kool-aid.
Most of these so called white reporters are jews who are waging a war against whites through TV indoctrination, federal reserve and immigration.
Anti-White supremacists are using puppets like Santorum, Gingrich, Romney as a foil to deceive the Whites.
Whites are less than 10% in World today and this Anti-White Supremacist writer wants even more genocide of Whites.
If this juvenile, insulting article had the races reversed, Chris Haire would never write another word that got published. It demonstrates two things; first how hollow, fetid, and useless the core of Political Correctness is, and secondly that the author has run out of excuses on how our country has fallen so far so fast.
Thankfully, the voters won't fall for the same false claims of racism this time, and Mr. Haire will be confined to his pitiful corner of the Internet where he can see racial prejudice in every comment and movement ... and non-re-election. You see, Chris, you and your ilk have been unmasked, and even the DNC will soon have to shut you down because your utterances will drive away far more votes than you hope to gather for your candidate.
The fact that South Carolinians aren't fazed by Gingrich's serial adultery says a lot more about South Carolina than it says about Gingrich.
Wow.. racism against white people, they gave you the world and you want more. Well, they HAD a black-guy running for the GoP. It`s too bad he was a cheater and a liar who had a wife and a few other "fk`s" on the side.
STFU you PoS.
If you hate white people so much, move to Africa where Muslims will cut off your head and rape your children.. Good job on your own homeland, buddy......
Right on, and funny. I've watched this process myself (from elsewhere over the years). As a white guy I've watched my black buddies getting pushed out of journalism or shoved into corners since the late 1990s, after first seeing a rise in the press corps percentages of non-whites. A few years ago the local (Kansas City) newspaper brought out a new weekly magazine to compete with the (used to be good) major city weekly. The new one is color blind only in that it fails to see that its own color (staff and articles) is almost totally white. I see this where I go to do work (photo/video) where I am often one of the few white faces and I ask myself whether the people putting down the magazine ever bother to just look around at the local patrons. Not that it is all racial in a racist way, just that the "powers" put new and white kiddies fresh out of college in advertising (not journalism) studies in charge and the only people they know are their other white buddies. So, in a single strike, down go salaries, down goes journalism and subjects covered are narrowed by the ad kiddies who are oblivious to themselves.
Excellent analysis Chris! You are right-on about all topics covered especially that half-wit Rick Perry. Like a lot of whites who come from rural America they confuse the concequences of their ignorance with the intent of their thoughts: "we don't intend to be racist and thoughtless, a lot of us just don't care and the rest of us just don't have the cultural skills to fathom the consequences of our actions." The undercurrent of racism in that crowd was so pungent that if Newt would have said, "Get a rope", they would have tied together all of the IT and video cabling in the room to form a noose. I would like to point out to the mentally deficient racist jack-ass who called the POTUS, "the affirmative action president", that Barack Obama won the presidency by garnering a majority of voters, which by definition means he needed no extraneous action, affirmative or otherwise, to become president. The catastrpohic damage of eight years of republican wars and non-stop spending left our economy shattered and near collapse. This is the hole that Barack Obama stepped into and now the same racist republican voters are blaming him for what their delusional voting habits wrought on all of us. I'm going to vote for Barack Obama because he has brought us back from the brink of national calamity. He has done it with dignity and fairness to all of our citizenry in the face of fierce partisan resistence. mark arendt, Richardson, Texas
There are 75 million Black and Brown "legal" Americans in the U.S., and several million more Asians/Natives and other people of color. America will never be great again, until the majority of white people accept and appreciate non-whites as full participants in American life. It is truly despicable how the first half-white President has been treated and vilified by factually inaccurate and "racist" comments.
This story was about the lack of diversity at a debate in South Carolina, a valid news story. How so many bloggers turned it into President Obama being a "socialist, gov't entitlements, or an inexperienced president (mind you he has more experience being president than any of the race-baiting, fear-mongering republicans), tends to come from a perspective that perpetuates racism.
Some of you would prefer a philandering, egotistical, tax-payer tit-sucking fat guy, or a tax-evading, corporate-raiding, job-shedding, off-shore wealth-hiding, elitist; than a centrist, tax-cutting, inclusive-minded, humane half-white candidate...just because the other half is Black.
Most Americans are truly wonderful people, but for many others, it's almost like the intolerant environment the enabled Jesus to be crucified.
There's an old saying that I couldn't help but think of as I read through the article...
"50% of succeeding in show business is showing up"
Now that little kernal of wisdom came from The Simpsons' character Krusty the Clown--and perhaps, by the logic of the author, he's opinion won't count either, since he's technically yellow and therefore probably somehow a racist, too.
I came down to cover the event from Canada. And for anything you may have heard of Canada's (well earned) reputation for tolerance, diversity and friendliness, nothing could have prepared me for the hospitality and graciousness I've had the joy of experiencing in Charleston--including and especially from the delegates and staffers of the GOP.
To label such people as racists simply because more african americans didn't attend the debates or show up to the convention is not only misdirected and mean spirited, but it also diminishes true impact of real racism by turning it into a catchphrase to throw at anyone who's politics you disagree with. Racism is too destructive and too evil to allow it to become a political weapon.
The fact that more minorities aren't involved as should be is obvious. But much of the reason for that comes from proponents of wellfare reform being labelled as being "racists" - as if it wasn't more racist to ignore the fact that more whites use wellfare than blacks. When Republicans bring up wanting school choice to escape the devastating impact failed schools can have on communities and inter-generational poverty, it is somehow transformed into the first step towards reinstitutionalizing educational segregation.
At a time when unemployment in Detroit among African American men is reaching 50%, the Ethiopian immigrant community in Detroit is experiencing and explosion of entrepreneurship and upward social mobility. Nigerian Africans remain, per capita, one of the number one holders of PhDs in America--much more likely to have a doctorate than their white, asian or indian counterparts.
An emphasis on strong families, the critical importance of the pursuit not just of a university education, but of an education that makes you competitive for 21st century jobs (Interesting how few successful african immigrants seem to have graduated with degrees in African Studies) and cementing a culture that actively engages all sides of the political discussion to generate genuine dialogue and real solutions is the only way to turn things around.
When I say that, as a black man, to black colleagues, no one disagrees. But, somehow, when Rick Santorum emphasizes the economic and community value in building stronger families, or Newt stresses the need for entrepreneurial and academic empowerment, the same comments become racist hellfire coming out the mouths of white devils. Naturally, after doing everything they can to convince that ugly lie to the black community, they then blame the very same smeared candidates for the hesitation for minorities to get involved in the gop.
The people involved in the gop aren't cartoons--they're dedicated people with genuine beliefs in the power of their message to improve the livelihoods of all ethnic demographics. When commentators start wanting to have a real discussion about ideas rather than name calling and demonization, I believe that more and more members of the African American community will be willing to do the same.
The people I met were anxious to share their ideas and aspirations with anyone willing to come to the table and listen. They were hungry to hear new voices to expand the discussion. If you want to start seeing some new faces at the table, all you've got to do is pull up a chair.
If there's one thing I've learned about Charleston hospitality, it's that there's always room for one more.
I'm surprised they allowed this racist garbage to be published. Quite immature. I can feel the angry black man spewing out throughout the article. How pathetic. Get a life kid.
So, only a few black journalists showed up for a debate huh? Most of us that have done well in life have forced ourselves daily to do things we don’t really want to do on our jobs, just because….it’s our job. We don’t have that inbred sense of entitlement I guess. No one’s falling for this garbage any longer, we just take it in and grin. Those whom want to succeed in life, “Show Up”
@Andrew Simon: welcome to Charleston. As a newcomer, I'll fill you in: CCP averages at least a column a month by some white guy apologizing for being white(google Will Moredock). As an independent, I'm leery of the extreme left and the extreme right. This obsession with self-loathing by white folks seems to be an affliction many on the extreme left suffer. While I wasn't surprised by the whiteness of the audience, I was surprised, and embarrassed, by their reaction to Newt's response to the first question. I can think of a few things closer to despicable than that question, like the hypocricy he exhibited while prosecuting Clinton.
Romney's Skeletons: His Bain Capital Received Millions in Bailouts , how does Romney make the case that He is successful ONLY from Private Capital and that he would know how to FIX the Economy better than Obama's Bailouts ????
http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/…
It's hilarious how many comments assume Chris Haire is black. These posters assume all white people are racist Republicans. What a bunch of ignorami!
Chris are you listening to Eminem again? Poor kid, let me guess, you're people rejected you as a kid?
@Andrew Simons....the welfare number is about the same....but percentage wise it's not even close since blacks make up a small percentage of the popultation...Gov Stats..Maryland blacks on welfare=77.1%, New Hampshire 90.2%, etc etc...you're delusional, Canada awaits you, http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ofa/charac…
I used to vote Democrat until the disgrace of the last Democratic nomination process. Mrs. Clinton was far more qualified but the old white men of the Democratic Party did not want a strong President. Obama has continued all the objectional policies of W Bush. Can any of you name one single campaign promise that the warrior has kept? I didn't think so. But the final push for me was all the name-calling from the Dems and it continues today. Because Obama was so totally unqualified for the job, I was undecided, so I started asking his supporters why they supported him. I got no answer beyond being called a racist for the first time in my life at the age of 56. I think it is racist to vote for someone whose only qualification is the color of his skin. He has not been very sucessful at on-the-job learning either. But the bottom line for me is that no Democrat will get my vote as long as the name calling continues. I am currently a Ron Paul supporter but since I am a jackass I think I'll just vote against Obama again regardless of who is nominated.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/pr…
But hey, don't let that get in your way, brave RON PAUL fan.
The "Not Romney" crowd came out in droves to show how backwards and out of touch the TEA, GOP, Republicans are! The hate mongers have corrupted the Republican party which once stood proudly, and now sinks into the abyss. It's going to be a long and tiring road for these guys.
The GOP serves the interests of approximately 1% of the American population, acquiring support by exploiting the racism and religious ideologies of many others whose interest it does not serve. They have won many elections securing support from families based on the rhetoric of "family values", then proceed to screw over any family outside of a small circle of 1% elites. And now the God-fearing Carolinians have chosen the most unseemly, amoral charlatan as their first pick to be President. Maybe it's the pride taken from watching him put a black man "in his place" on national TV.
I find the SC republicans very entertaining, brings me back to Gone with the Wind
Loudog
Hallelujah for the Religious Right from South Carolina! Let's see..... Newt TWICE divorces a wife and then marries the bimbo he was screwing while married to her, Herm Cain has an affair so in SC, Herm gets pilloried and Newt gets canonized. Then, let's see.... in the "right to work", capitalist capitol of America Mitt obeys all the laws, lays off some people and makes a bunch of money, while up in Washington Newt screws the pooch so egregiously Congress fines him nearly, get this, A THIRD OF A MILLION DOLLARS, now THAT"S a fine! So, back in SC the "family values" state? We're votin' for Newt! Well what about Santorum? one word - Yankee!
So class, let's summarize: Who on the ballot ain't, Black or Yankee or Mormon?
This is hilarious. The author is obviously making fun of hypocrites with his over the top racism. No one should take this seriously, because no serious reporter would ever write an article so poorly thought out and employing such obvious double standards.
Chris Haire is showing how foolish some people are in their reasoning by taking silly logic and extending it to the nth degree. This is the journalistic equivalent of a clown doing pratfalls to make people laugh.
A very good example of the double standard in the media. Any conservative who had written a similar piece with the characterization of our governor and rep Scott would be so lambasted as a racist, He or she would be looking for a new job. Since Chris is a liberal that makes it okay?
I don't see the humor in some of the piece that others seem to see. I sure don't give Chris some credit of being so brillant as the previous poster.
An apology or retraction really is in order for some of the piece.
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Martin Luther King, Jr.
This is why no one takes City Paper seriously for anything other than food and music. A bunch of white "journalists", whining about all the white journalists, and how horrible it is that white people do yadda yadda yadda.
Most of you are just entirely too white to understand what the hell Chris is talking about. And it's not your fault, really. You're all products of a society that's still trying hard to come to terms with the grim reality of its own history; a history that includes several hundred years of slavery followed by decades of (often brutal) racial repression.
And now, at the tail end of the 20th century leading into the 21st, you're faced with the uncomfortable truth that, as white people, you don't really understand the world anymore. You bitch and moan about BET and Black History Month without stopping for a single moment to realize that, for some people, it is the only connection to their culture and history that they are allowed. The other 400 channels of TV and 11 months of the year are dedicated almost exclusively to white, upper-middle class America.
Hell, for that matter, most of you should actually be pissed about that, too. After all, while most of you are probably white, you probably aren't upper-middle class. You aren't even middle class anymore. You're poor. And, like your poor ancestors, you've been pitted against other poor people in a sad competition for what little cultural and social space is afforded to you by the real devils.
But, since the motif of the City Paper is seemingly race and not class (which is actually a severe shortcoming, but not one that's going to be fixed anytime soon, since talking about class in America is just absolutely not going to happen in any meaningful sense), then we really do have to stick with what we're given.
In this context, it's the problem of a mostly white media reporting on a mostly white set of candidates from a mostly white party in a nation that is slowly becoming less and less white. It's not racism to address these issues, it's absolutely essential to better understanding them.
Now, if any of you can actually come up with something better to talk about than "Chris is a leftist, whiny, white guilt asshole," fine. Otherwise, you should probably all take your heads out of your asses and read a book or two.
