Trapped in the post-9/11 U.S.A.

Mad World

This is not a column about 9/11. This is not a column about the nearly 3,000 men and women who died on Sept. 11, 2001. This is not a column about our heroic first responders. This is not a column about the unprecedented courage shown by the passengers of United 93. This is not a column about where we were when the world stopped turning. This is not a column about sticking a boot in anybody's ass. This is not a column about My Pet Goat. This is a column about what we are now and what we may be in the future. This is a column about hope.

I hope that one day we will once again be able to follow our loved ones to the gate at the airport and wave goodbye to them as the plane takes flight.

I hope that one day we will realize that vengeance is not good foreign policy.

I hope that one day we will understand that it is never acceptable to torture our enemies.

I hope that one day our politicians and partisan pundits will no longer feel the need to question the patriotism of the opposition party.

I hope that one day we will be able to curb our addiction to oil.

I hope that one day we will no longer feel the need to meddle in the affairs of the Middle East.

I hope that one day we will understand that war is not entertainment.

I hope that one day we will see that our actions can create more enemies than friends.

I hope that one day we will realize that evil men will commit evil deeds in the name of religion.

I hope that one day we will realize that no religion is free from the taint of bloodshed.

I hope that one day we will realize that our foreign wars have helped lead the country to near financial ruin.

I hope that one day our government no longer feels the need to spy on its citizens.

I hope that one day our troops are not forced to continue to fight when their enlistments come to an end.

I hope that one day we will wage war only when American lives are truly in danger.

I hope that one day our military will not rely on guns for hire and contractors who recklessly spend taxpayer money.

I hope that one day our government will not work with newspaper columnists to out American spies for partisan gain.

I hope that one day our government will not cover up the friendly fire deaths of American heroes for propaganda purposes.

I hope that one day no foreign prisoner will be dragged around on a leash like a dog.

I hope that one day we can fly an American flag in our front yards without feeling as if we are taking a side in a partisan debate.

I hope that one day we will realize that God is on our side and theirs as well.

I hope that one day the poor will not fight our wars.

I hope that one day our government takes care of its soldiers when they return home.

I hope that one day there are no color-coded threat levels.

I hope that one day all of America will be a free speech zone.

I hope that one day the national guard will stay at home where they are needed most.

I hope that one day a trio of country singers will not receive death threats for speaking out against the president.

I hope that one day we will realize that the actions of a handful of evil men are not reflective of the actions of an entire people.

I hope that one day the troops will come home.
