Glenn McConnell vows to involve state in unnecessary lawsuit

Posted by Chris Haire on Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 5:43 AM

I hate to do this, but thanks to state Sen. Glenn McConnell I've got to break out the rule book once again.

Let's see. Page 218. Rule No. 3234: It is extremely tacky to name a bridge or roadway after a living person, especially if that person has not yet retired from public service.

And then there's Page 115. Rule No. 2176: Legislators should never ever pass a bill to score political points when they are fully aware that the bill will be challenged in the courts. It is a waste of taxpayers' money.

Of course, McConnell doesn't care about the rules. Despite the recent court decision to block certain provisions in Arizona's new illegal immigration law (and the likelihood that the court battle will ultimately go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court), the S.C. Senate leader and former Confederate knick-knack purveyor announced yesterday that he still plans to go forward with an illegal immigration bill in the Palmetto State modeled after the embattled Arizona law.

According to the state Senate Republican Caucus :

Today South Carolina Senate President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell vowed to push Arizona style immigration reform in the palmetto state, despite today’s judicial action by a federal judge.

“Like Arizona’s legislators, we are tired of Washington’s failure to act. We can’t rely on the federal government anymore. That’s why states are being forced to do whatever they can to fight illegal immigration. The federal government fiddles while Rome burns and then sues states who try to throw water on the flames,” Senator McConnell said.

He continued, “We see today’s decision as only the first step in an important legal struggle. This ruling will not deter me from continuing to work on this issue. I am committed to continuing full steam to have a bill ready for the Senate and for us to pass a stronger Arizona style immigration bill when we return in January.”

Good for him! We need the same bill here in SC. If the Feds would do their job and enforce our laws the states wouldn't have too.

If your home was broken into every night and your food, medicine and property was stolen and you called the police and they never came, how long would it be before you picked up a gun and protected yourself? Wakeup America and cull both herds!

Press forward Mr. McConnell! You have the support of the MAJORITY of South Carolina and the MAJORITY of the country! Don't pay attention to the Kool-Aid drinkers like this worthless trouble maker that calls himself a writer. The time is now that the states join the movement and send the federal government and our despicable representatives a message that we do not approve of this socialist agenda and that we demand this illegal immigration infestation be resolved, NOW! Enforce the laws federal government! We the People have spoken and you must do as we desire!

You go Mr. McConnell!!! We the citizens of South Carolina are behind you 100%. Every state agency that you go in to try and get some help are full of Mexicans. I am not saying that they don't deserve any type of aide if it is needed, however they must be legal to get that help. I am an American citizen, born and raised in this great country. I have worked my entire life and paid my taxes. I am currently unemployed and in the process of trying to get unemployment. By the way I am 59 years old and because I own my own little townhouse, a car and a TV I don't qualify for any type of assistance. It dosen't matter that I worked all those years and paid my taxes like a good AMERICAN CITIZEN!!! Now I am sitting here wondering where the money is going to come from to make my house payment this month or my car payment or utility bills, much less food to put in my mouth. Something needs to be done before our greaty country is taken over by persons that have no leagl right to be here and are bleeding our social agencies dry. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND THE AMERICAN FLAG!!!! Not the mexican flag.

Twice! You say "anit-immigration" and that's FALSE! He and others that support AZ are NOT against immigration! Please slip the word ILLEGAL in there to make your article credible! Also, remember....we are the only country in the world where you even have the opportunity to BECOME a citizen.

Way to go Mr. McConnell. This writer must be totally naive. It is grand that people want to improve their well being by coming to America, but they need to follow the established procedures and become legalized citizens; if they can't do that then they need to be deported; yes, they are taking away from all the legal citizens in this country; I also think that just because a child of an illegal immigrant is born in this country that the said child should be entitled to American citizenship. Most countries in the world do NOT allow this. Maybe this writer is unaware of the extent of the cost illegal immigrants have on all components of our society, not to say anything about the illegal activities and habits that are brought into this country. If the situation were reversed and we illegally immigrated to their country, we would be deported or worse depending on the country.

Here's the rub - our Federal infrastructure can't handle prosecution of illegals that are caught. So, lets appoint a new chief of illegal immigration, he can have a staff of, let's say, 1000 - bloated, like any other part of our government, and guess who get's to pay for it? Me. The problem isn't ever going to go away. People want what we have. I don't agree with people coming here illegally, I just want everyone to remember that this is going to cost us!

Here's an idea:

Reciprocity.

Let's adopt Mexico's immigration policy.

Do us a favor Chris, and publish Mexico's policies for dealing with people who cross their borders illegally.

I triple dog dare you!

I agree if you are caught in Mexico illegally, you might as well hang it up. I also agree that if the "Legal Citizens" would quite hiring the "ILLegal Citizens" we wouldnt have such a problem Also if you would make it harder for the illegals to send money back to mexico and keep the money "IN Country"" that would help too ....but what do I know

I'm a citizen of South Carolina. I do not agree with Glenn McConnell. Here's a message for all of you, go to Blockbuster and find a movie called "Sleep Dealers". It's a good movie no matter what side of the issue you stand on.

But, I realize that there's no way I'll convince or persuade anyone to come to my side simply by commenting on this site. I said what I needed to say: I'm a South Carolinian, raised in Columbia, North Augusta, and now Charleston (for the past 5 years), and I do not agree with the Arizona Immigration Law. Those who agree... represent!

Chris, the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals will hear any challenge of a an immigration bill that SC may pass in the near future. The 4th Circuit is very conservative and will not likely overrule out statute when it is enacted. Arizona falls under the 9th Circuit, which is notoriously liberal. The US Supreme Court will probably resolve any conflicts between the circuits.

Hey Rex. Good points. The SC law may stand up in court. Not going to argue there. But it will go to court ... and taxpayers' dollars will be used.

The time has certainly come for immigration reform — creating a system that will allow current illegals to work legally with work visas (and be documented) seems to make sense and to legalize others currently living here that want to become citizens (many probably do not) — but no one seems to have the balls to go for it. As a result, the GOP uses the issue to fire up the base and the Dem try to ignore it, hoping not to piss off Hispanic-American voters. Lame.

I'm less concerned about the borders than I am about the fact that the Mexican drug cartels are in the illegal immigrant border crossing business. I would argue that the greater problem here — at least from a violent crime standpoint — is the ongoing drug war. Decriminalization would go a long way to lessen the power of the Mexican drug cartels.

Decriminalization of illegal immigration or drugs?

Point 1: It doesn't matter what the majority of Americans want, if they don't like the status quo, change the law. In the meantime, government officials must obey the current laws whether they like them or not.
Point 2: If the government would enforce the illegal worker laws and prosecute the EMPLOYERS of illegals, if nobody were hiring, how many of these illegals would stick around?
What??? prosecute law-breaking Americans to stop them from illegally hiring these people??? HELL NO!!! We have the God-given right to hire anyone we want to! (except blacks, Africans, Asians, etc.) You can't tell us we can't hire cheap illegal workers if we want to!!

It's not even close Screddawg. WWI and WWII alone resulted in more than 76 million killed. Not to mention hundreds of smaller wars and genocides from Bosnia to Rwanda.
But that doesn't even matter, because no one still thinks that authoritarian-communism is a good idea, while most Americans are extremely nationalistic.

You can't document 11 million illegals anymore than you can find them and deport them.

Why does the Omama andministration think it can control global climate when it can't control our borders?

I like Fred Imus' plan. Put a bounty on illegals. You would be allowed 3 a day and get $100 a piece from the gov't. You would be allowed to keep their cars, clothes, appliances, etc. and would have to reimburse the gov't up to $100 by selling those possessions. Like Fred says: there used to be too many mountain lions so they put on bounty on them. Now there are not too many mountain lions.

SArk,

Does your 76 million number include Mao, Stalin and Hitler?

Were those seventy million deaths under Mao's purges an accident, or a failed experiment?

How about the twenty five million in the Ukraine, starved to death by Josef Stalin? Oops, slipsies.........

How about Hitler's ten million in the concentration camps?

Have you got a reliable source for the 76 million from WWI and WWII, and does that include combatants and civilians and the holocaust? Just wondering.....
