Clyburn on town shouters: Been there, done that during the Civil Rights Movement

Posted by Chris Haire on Fri, Aug 14, 2009 at 8:37 AM

The Huffington Post recently spoke with U.S. Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) about the more vocal antics of some healthcare reform opponents.

According to HuffPo, Clyburn said:

"I have seen this kind of hate before. I have seen this discussion before ... I have seen snarling dogs going after people who were trying to peacefully assemble. I have seen the eyes of people who were being spat upon."

"This is all about activity trying to deny the establishment of a civil right. And I do believe that healthcare for all is — a civil right ... I think that is why you see this kind of activity. This is an attempt on the part of some to deny the establishment of a civil right."

Hmm. Don't really know about healthcare being a civil right there, Jim. I mean, it's the ethical thing to do what you can to help your fellow man, and there's that whole Hippocratic Oath thing, but a civil right? I would have to say no.

While there's no doubt that some of these folks are motivated by at least a smidgen of racial prejudice, to compare all opponents of the healthcare reform plan as racist is simply asinine. We're talking about a fundamental shift in how things work here, and, if you're anything like me, you're woefully uninformed about the details.

As for all the lies and propaganda out there about the healthcare bill, well, I'm pretty well versed in that.

Mr Clyborn- So you and Obama want to clean up the health care mess. You say we should "just get out of the way and shutup." You are a fool. Tell us. Will you and your family be using the same "health care program" us peons are having forced upon us? Signed. Norman Falcone

Sheesh. If this healthcare bill passes, you can bet that when the rationing starts (and it will), that Clyburn and others will start proposing some sort of "affirmative action" for the dispensing of healthcare based on race. I can smell it already.
