More doom and gloom from DeMint

Posted by Chris Haire on Wed, Jul 15, 2009 at 8:42 AM

This is from a recent article from The Fix, a WaPost blog:

"I am not going to spend another ten years of my life waiting for some slot on some committee," said DeMint. "I don't think the country has that long."

Ten years, eh? That's not a long time. So what'll it be Jim, gladiator games or cattle cars? I reckon they'll be coming after you first. Which is the way you probably want it.

Somebody give me 10cc's of Little Orphan Annie optimism. DeMint needs to think about "Tomorrow," stat.

Shame on you!! you write like all the other so called "reporters" just pull a sentence out of someone else's story and write about it. Why not pick out another sentence in the same report? How about, "I've found no one listens," DeMint said of his old approach during a recent interview with the Fix as part of our "Rising" series. "My role in the Senate is to come up with the right ideas and take them directly to the American people."

or write this..I will go after Democrats and I will shame Republicans," promised DeMint.
or this..DeMint practices the conservatism he preaches. Since being elected to the Senate in 2004 (he spent six years previous in the House), DeMint has had the most conservative voting record twice (2006 and 2007) and the fifth most conservative in 2008, according to the invaluable ratings by National Journal.

can't do that huh? because then you would have to change the gloom and doom part of your title and actually have to write something good about our Senator. Just shows what kind of morals you have..

While our individual political mindsets are at opposite ends of the spectrum, Justine, I agree with your point about lazy journalism, or as is increasingly the case with CP, facile commentary dressed up to be news. But I suspect Mr. Haire is much too involved in deep, probing pieces like the Battery Bladder Buster and the Lowcountry Smoothie to devote much time to expressing cogent opinions. To be fair, he isn't alone in this trend of latching onto a sound byte (witness Sonia Sotomayor), utterly divorcing it from context, and parading the disembodied statement around the town square on a bloody pole. Journalists and politicians alike tread a very slippery slope with regard to their integrity and qualifications when they take the easy way out. Aside from this, I suppose the metaphors about cattle cars and gladiators is supposed to evoke images of impending socioeconomic breakdown, but the references are entirely too random, at least in the very limited context in which they were framed, as to be evocative, or even provocative.

Come on now: these times are much too dire to be serious. Lighten up.

And just so you know, I have no integrity at all, and frankly, if you ever call me a journalist — a loathsome term if there ever was one — then, sir, I might be inclined to challenge you to a game of rock, paper, scissors.

Clever riposte, Chris. Provocative, in a tiresomely childish way. So, in your capacity as managing editor, what you're saying is that what CP contributes to the commonweal is not news, or even informed opinion, but outright satire; therefore, integrity is not required and none of us should take you seriously.

The sad thing is that I don't necessarily disagree with your criticism of DeMint -- God knows his pronouncements make him an absurdly easy target (much like the previous poster boy for ultra-conservatism, Rick Santorum) -- but the heavy-handedness with which you deliver your argument (if it can be called that) makes you not much different than Limbaugh or Hannity. Do you mean what you say or are you "just kidding?" Even when you're engaging in satire, an art form you have yet to fully master, integrity matters. I'll lighten up when you grow up.

Life's a snuff film, so I don't see any harm in treating it like a PG-13 popcorner.

And if Michael Bay filmed a biopic of mine and cast only Transformers, I would be a robotic dog humping the leg of Rush Limbaugh.

That said, I speak solely for myself, not the entire City Paper staff. To suggest that because I engage in funny business, they must as well is a pretty lame charge.
