Jim DeMint compares U.S. to pre-WWII Germany

Don't believe the hype; he wasn't referring to Nazi Germany

Well, if you haven't heard it yet, then let me be the first to tell you: Jim DeMint has compared the U.S. of A. of today to, wait for it, Nazi Germany.

Or at least that's the conclusion that some folks are drawing based on a speech that DeMint recently gave before the National Press Club and reported by David Weigel of the Washington Independent, a Center for Independent Media online pub.

According to Weigel, here's what DeMint said:

Part of what we're trying to do in "Saving Freedom" is just show that where we are, we're about where Germany was before World War II where they became a social democracy. You still had votes but the votes were just power grabs like you see in Iran, and other places in South America, like Chavez is running down in Venezuela. People become more dependent on the government so that they're easy to manipulate. And they keep voting for more government because that's where their security is. When our immigrants get here, they're worried, because they see it happening here.

I hate to say this, because I'm not a DeMint fan, but I don't think he was referring to Nazi Germany. Instead, I think he was referring to the days of the Weimar Republic, a period of supremely bad inflation for Germany. In fact, things were so bad off there that the Nazis were able to rise up and take over.

Having recently read DeMint's recently released book, Saving Freedom, I remember some kind of Weimar reference. And let me tell you, that was one of the least controversial things Jim said in the book.

But I'll get to all that in due time.

Does anyone in our State goverment know what the hell they are doing or did they ever? I mean really? Has'nt all of the Southern bullshit of melodramatic histrionics need something more than just the world stage? Hey where is the buttered popcorn?

Sen. Demint is correct. The unrestrained spending without much thought of how it will be paid is how the Wiemar republic got inflation in the hunreds of thousand percent. Our Government is making it's first attempts to regulate speech that is critical of the government and the elections seem increasingly meaningless.

I would hope that higher-level political minds have some concept that there was more to inter-war Germany than just a madman out to kill Jews. While I'm not accustomed to politicians using nuance (the public reaction is usually poor to anything but bullet-point repetition and banner slogans) I don't think for one second that Senator DeMint is talking about Nazis. Thus I guess I'm in agreement with Chris Haire.

Heavens to Murgatroid, even.
