Sometimes it pays to follow Twitter. Today we learned that the state House of Representatives is currently considering what Rep. Nathan Ballentine apparently called "The Firefly Vodka Bill" on his Twitter account, House Bill 3452.
Don't know much about it at this point (we're not experts on legalese), but if you want to read the bill, go here.

If I'm reading this bill correctly, it's (at least in part) about the money. There's a $50,000 distillery license fee, along with a maximum production per distillery of 125,000 cases per year. It looks like there's an existing requirement that they only have one distillery per county.
There's also limits in the bill that would prevent consumers from going to the manufacturer and stocking up. Consumers can only get three bottles a day. Also, manufacturers pay the $50,000. Micro-distilleries pay $5,000 a year
Ok,Ok, I'm getting this now. The 125,000 limit is for micro-distillery's (any more and they're subject to the larger fee). But you can only have one micro-distillery in the entire state. Because chasing off enterprise is what South Carolina is all about.
